Crazy distortion on desktop

If I just drag the cursor around, my desktop becomes distorted.. I re-plug one of my monitor cable and it seems to have fixed it for now, but what just happened?

Possibly, but HDMI pretty much slot into place. I don't understand how it could have been a bad connection.

You can still get dirt, corrosion, or whatever between the contacts over time.
