cant access old hdd

HardStroke

so ive posted about this 2 days ago but ill try again since i dont think i got a good answer

ive got an old hdd that ive connected to my pc

the drive is recognized (kind of) but in disk management it says that its unrecognized and needs to be formatted

can i just access it by assigning it a new letter and not formatting it? it has really important stuff on it and i cant lose it

i dont really know how to use linux for this problem :/

if it was useful give it a like :) btw if your into linux pay a visit here

Geezzz man I've been telling since yesterday just use Ubuntu already. It's just like creating a windows 10 install usb stick

Windows is crap in reading unpartitioned drive. Even if you tried really hard. It will just end up asking to format it.

You don't even need to install it just chose 'Try Ubuntu' and you will be dropped in the desktop.

how big is your drive and do you have enough space for all files in your pc? (for cloning the drive just in case)

anyway

open a  terminal and and install disk test by

sudo apt install testdisk

then tell here

if it was useful give it a like :) btw if your into linux pay a visit here

disk is 320gb and i have an additional hdd that i use for games it has around 700 800gb of free space so i have enough space to clone it twice

i just write 'sudo apt install testdisk' in the terminal?

do not bother with that

https://gparted.org/livecd.php

this live distro is specialized for data recovery thus it should have all software needed

doing that on a live ubuntu is more painful than using that

if it was useful give it a like :) btw if your into linux pay a visit here
