audio interface

Hi,

Rrecently I bought a midi piano and I bought a midi cable. I have a U-Phoria UM2 and if you know about audio interfaces. You'll know that this audio interface doesn't have midi inputs and outputs.

The problem is that if I connect my piano directly to the PC when I play I have a little delay and it's imposible to play. I read from Internet it's just the audio interface of my PC. So i'm thinking to buy a audio interface.

The question is:

Can someone help me? I'm searching a CHEAP audio interface with midi in and midi out.

If you just need midi in/out then a midi interface is all you need, as you already have the UM2. The basic inline cable interfaces work well, or there's lots of used interfaces on ebay, you don't need anything special.

What keyboard have you got? And what are you trying to do?

Ok, so from what i'm seeing in the manual, you can either use the physical midi port or it will operate as a USB-midi device.

 

So if you want to use it to control an midi instrument in a DAW then you can just connect it over USB to your computer and it will appear as a midi device. You will need a usb cable with a type B connector for the keyboard and either type A (a traditional USB port) or type C if that's what your computer has.

You mean that i have to connect my piano to type C connector?. Then I should'n have delay?

If you're doing analogue out into the line in, then back out the headphone port then there will be some delay.

 

Depending on what you're trying to do you will be better off doing different things. What are you actually trying to do?

I'm ussing sythesia and when I play it does not have delay to show that i'm playing notes but it have some delay on audio

Ok, so yes, using it in usb-midi mode should be the solution.

Yeah, no, don't listen to the other replies here. If you play the keyboard and there's latency that has nothing to do with the port you plug it into.

 

Latency when using an interface is controlled by ASIO buffer settings, you need to be using ASIO drivers to take advantage of this though and from memory the UM2 doesn't have any. Download asio4all, that should really help.

I already instslled that drivers and didin't help. I don't know why. But I Can't connect my keyboard to t'he audio interface because It does nit have any port to connect directly to the piano. It' why i connect the piano to the PC but i have nit good latency. That's the problem

If you've already installed asio4all can you send screenshots of the settings you have it on??

 

I understand you can't connect it to the interface, you don't need it physically connected to the interface for it to work properly, I don't ever hook mine up to the interface when I'm recording, it's always by USB.

The ASIO drivers is just a double click programa. You don't have to configure nothing right?

Let me clarify your request - are you specifically looking to record MIDI commands? Or are you looking to record the Piano as a sound file?

 

These are not the same thing. MIDI basically captures information about how the Piano is being played (which keys, amount of pressure, foot pedals, etc) - so that you can reproduce the performance (or even modify the performance).

 

Otherwise, capturing the sound from the piano should be easy - the back of your piano should have an analog output of some kind (usually a pair of Phono 6.25" (1/4") jacks, typically with one of them also labeled as Mono).  From there, you just need the right kind of cable to plug into the piano and into the interface. The UM2 has a combo jack (XLR and 1/4"n combined into one port) - so you could use a straight 1/4" to 1/4" (male to male) cable, or you could use a 1/4" to XLR cable.
