Need some advice on buying a laptop, Asus Zephyrus g14 VS 13in Mac Book Pro

Hey guys,

I recently want to purchase a laptop that weighs less than 2kg and thickness less than 2cm. My budget is $1500

Mainly using for light 4k video editing, heavily video rending, plus running the backend database.

Also light gaming for league of legends, CS GO, Hearthstone, Civilization 6, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Fortnite.

I put two selections in my lists, the new M1 chip Mac book Pro            vs                Asus  Zephyrus g14

For my budget $1500, I could get the 13in Mac Book Pro.

The new M1 CPU, 8GB ram, and 512gb SSD.  COST $1499

The 13 in mac book pro weights 1.4 kg, is 1.6 cm thick.

The cons for mac book pro:

1. Everything is not upgradable

2. 8gb ram and 512 GB SSD may not be able handle my needs

3. 2020 M1 13 in Mac Book pro HAS NO HDMI. Why don't they add HDMI port on it..

M1 13 inches Mac Book Pro connection ports:

  • Charging
  • DisplayPort
  • Thunderbolt 3 (up to 40Gb/s)
  • USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10Gb/s)
  • Headphone

The pro

1. It has great battery life.

2. Has native webcam

In terms of Asus  Asus Zephyrus g14,

Ryzen 9 4900 HS CPU, 16 GB ddr4 ram, 1 TB NVME SSD, RTX 2060 Max q.

It weighs 1.59 kg, is 1.7cm thick. I'd say pretty solid for a 14in laptop.

The pros of G14:

1. Has much stronger graphic cards and greater overall performance for productivity and game.

2. Higher native ram and SSD. Twice than the Mac Book Pro

3. the RAM and SSD are upgradable, 40gb for ram, and higher volume NVME SSD for SSD (could use 2TB replace the 1TB)

4. Has HDMI port

G14 Connection ports:

1 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type C,

2 x USB 3.2 Gen 2,

1 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 with Power Delivery

DisplayPort 1.4

1 x HDMI 2.0b

1 x 3.5mm audio

Cons for G14:

1. No webcam, I gonna use the 50 dollars cheaper than Mac Book pro to buy a 4k camera.

2. No thunderbolt port, but I don't use it for most of my work

3. shorter battery life

I know for the productivity, the g14 would beat the 13in m1 mac book pro, but how about the throttling? Would that be a problem for G14?

Thank you for your comments.

The Mac book is a first generation product. There is a video by mkbhd but there are not many people that had it yet, so I don't know if you can game at all or there is a compatibility issue. Also talking about video editing is strange because most Mac users but Mac for final cut, if that is your video editing software then there is no question. I'd suggest to wait at least a month to have reviews from end users or at least YouTube testers to test it before you make an expensive purchase.

Thanks, I would rather wait for period of time.

If you're doing any kind of professional work the Mac makes little sense. You have a huge list of cons for the Apple, and basically one for the Asus.

I'd think the choice would be rather obvious.

Hey Dizmo,

I think the case for me is that I only have budget at $1500.

And I thought you may a little bit misunderstand about the cons and pros,  I just list what they have from specs sheet.

These are the true features each of them offered at my budget $1500.

As you see there are 3 cons of the $1499 Mac book pro, and 3 cons for $1449 G14  \ \

But G14 is more competitive, since it brings more features in terms of stronger professional using performance than the $1499 Mac Book Pro at a lower price.

Unless I increase my budget to $2499 to buy a better 16inch mac book pro, and compare it with the $1499 G14, the Mac Book Pro got a chance to win. G14 has RTX 2060 with CUDA cores.

The 512gb, 8gb ram 13 inch Mac book pro is kind of over priced, or it's just not competitive as the same price level's AMD laptop offers.

The reason I ask is that from my perspective, as a technology enthusiast, the AMD laptop obviously offered much more stronger performance for both professional using and gaming, (at the similar weight and thickness) than the same price M1 Mac Book Pro, but the medias were marketing go pro for Mac. Feels like a stereotype, like Asian people are good at material arts and math.

I thought they were more professional in terms of technology than me, so I came to the forum to ask the other people's idea.

Thank you for comment,

Have a great day Dizmo,
