Image editing program question

I have two .png's I need to modify. I need to make their white backgrounds transparent (here are the two images in question). I need to know of a program which can do this (free, of course).

MS Paint doesn't display transparency, so you won't see it. And I second GIMP. Haven't used it in years, though.

This is all one layer though, so I don't think that will work.

Go to layer at the top and then go to transparency and then add an alpha channel. And then go back to layers and transparency and click color to alpha. @tmcclelland455

That made everything transparent, but we're getting closer.

 

EDIT: I'm trying to get it so just Luke?, Linus, and the couch are solid.

Whenever you click on color to alpha, make sure that the color selected is white.

^^^ .avi video, you might need VLC to play it. Video quality seems to suck, but you should get the idea.

You're doing it right, it's just that they are actually transparent, the background just shows through them making them brighter.

Paint.net is another good program to do this sort of thing in. Its a free and decent enough Photoshop equivalent.

In paint.net you can paint over all the areas you want transparent with whatever tool you want. So if you want all the white to be transparent then use the paint can and transparent and click on the background. But it can do a lot more sophisticated approaches than that, you can paint it pixel by pixel if you want to.

Use the color picker and select their colors before you make them transparent and then color them back in with the paint bucket when they're transparent.

Easy way (may leave some edges):

1) Choose Magic wand (I got Finnish translation so can't say what its called in English).

2) Select all white parts you don't want to include.

3) Now you have two options. Either just delete white pxels that are selected or Selection -> Invert (Cntrl+I). Now all not-white pixels are selected and you can copy paste them to new layer or image.

 

Other way is to use Freehand selection and click from point to point style.

Download Adobe Photoshop trial. Open the files in PS and you should see those backgrounds are already transparent... well, they should be. If not, use the magic eraser tool and delete the white background.

Will check those backgrounds when I get home.

I would, but I don't have any room to download the installer (not putting it on my hard drive, and all of my flash drives and my SD card are FULL).

No worries. Well logo is transparent, but The Wan show pic has some white background. You could use magnetic lasso tool, select borders and copy and paste picture on transparent background. Not sure if there's equivalent tool to magnetic lasso in GIMP.
