PS3 .mkv files?

Go to solution Solved by TR1GGERHAPPYSAM,

You can try converting the video with handbrake, its free and awesome (http://handbrake.fr/)  , I think ps3 can play mkv's straight out, but I know it plays mp4's too.

Let me know how you get on.

I am posting this for a friend who doesnt want to make an account.

The Question:

How do you play .mkv video files (or any file that is not typically supported by the PS3 operating system) through a USB that is plugged into a playstation 3?  For instance, is there a program that I can load onto the PS3?  If there is no option, then is there a free program that can convert my videos without destroying the video or sound quality and doesn’t put any watermarks or other advertisement?  I have tried the free version of AVS video converter with no good luck.  Since the free version doesn’t give me a good demo, I am reluctant to pay for the full program.

Nope.

PS3's cannot play .mkv files.

Options to play a .mkv on a PS3:

  1. Convert to one of the formats in the link above via handbrake, format factory, or some other formatting encoding software.
  2. Stream the media to the PS3 with something that encodes on the fly such as Plex Media Server.

And that's it.

I stand corrected, can't you use the windows media server function to stream from the PC where they are stored to the ps3 ?

Hmm, maybe. I think it still has to be the right format though, because the PC doesn't handle the format or encoding itself on Windows Media Server (Admittedly, I know nothing about WMS, I'm just assuming here).

I'm fairly certain the PS3 does support .MKV files. I use my PS3 as a media device almost every day and have used quite a few .MKV files in the past. Unless my streaming software is transcoding it on the fly without my knowledge... but I doubt that given the machine I was running it off for a while couldn't transcode 420p films let alone 1080p ones.

Then I have no idea. That link was the official Sony PS3 User's guide. Maybe it's out-dated and a firmware update enabled .mkv support. No idea, but I do know I've tried directly playing .mkvs with my PS3 off my NAS with a direct share. It wouldn't work. Kept saying incorrect format or something.

Then I tried with Plex sending the media, and it worked fine (since Plex transcodes on the fly).

  • 2 months later...

I used PS3 from last year and was looking for a solution all the time to play MKV on PS3 easily. Then I found a guide which inform me:

MKV is famous as an open standard free container format which can hold an unlimited number of video, audio, picture, or subtitle tracks in one file. It is intended to serve as a universal format for storing common multimedia content, like movies or TV shows. Although MKV is one of the most popular formats, it is still impossible to play MKV on PS3.

To successfully play MKV on PS3, a widely used solution without limit is to convert MKV to PS3 compatible formats, no matter you are Windows user or Mac user.
