My friend bought this a year or two ago (facepalm) and he wants to upgrade to a 760 now but he needs a new psu to go along with it. I was thinking 500w would be fine, but I need a small one so it could fit. Budget under $80 USD

EDIT: it uses an external power brick so I need an external 500w

What PSU does the system have? Yes a 500w would be fine.

Won't fit.

XFX 550w

Won't fit.

The X51 does not take ATX power supplies as far as I know. It has an external power brick.

Yeah I just found out it uses an external brick.

Yeah I need an external brick sorry guys

Power bricks are extremeley rare, I hope he got the bigger psu (yes he had a choice there) he could get with the x51 if not, he s pretty much stuck.

See if he could get away with a 750TI on the performance side as this card consume NO power(60W max) at all, or look at the power draw of his current gpu and get a gpu of similar power.

What about the Corsair CS550M? It's really small that PSU. An other idea is to buy a small SFX PSU, but those are only 450W.

there s no psu place at all in that case, even a sfx psu wont fit let alone a atx one.

your friend might be better off buying a new case and transfering his components, either a common matx tower or a silverstone rvz01 if he want to keep the same form factor except with a sfx psu spot.

no one forced him to buy it, and moving the psu out for a power brick did make the case smaller, this is important for some people.

Ghetto mod time! In all seriousness though, would an external atx unit with custom cables work (so long as it is a modular unit just unplug the psu when moving it).

If there isn't room for a psu he must be pretty stuffed on got choice as well.

You've never worked on a dell/alienware pc.

I had to move a dell pc to a different case and it involved welding.

WELDING!

i m talking about this on specifically, it uses stanard components except for the psu and the riser card.

it s just as easy to take everything out here as a off the shelf itx box.

Nope, but nobody forces anybody to buy anything. That does not preclude companies from screwing their customers.
