Should I buy and save or wait..

my processor is kinda due for an update. I have a ryzen 5 2600x that has served me extremely well these past 2 years. Back then I was mainly using it for gaming and some light work on the side but during this year of college and most likely the years to come i'm taking many 3d animation classes using maya and other software. Since where working at home because the virus i've had to do all my projects at home and have really come to see the limitations of the cpu. When rendering in arnold it takes like 30 seconds to render one frame or if I open the renderview it lags the entire program making it almost impossible to do anything else. Since it looks like we're gonna be home a little while longer i've been looking to upgrade my cpu and have kind of settled on the ryzen 9 3950x. However, I know the Ryzen 5000 series is coming out and was wondering if the price difference is worth it. As of right now I can buy the 3950x for 650 which is 100 dollars less than retail and 150 dollars less than the 5950. So, ultimately is it worth paying 150 dollars more for the new processor or just buy the old one.

I'd recommend getting the new processor, it would be worth it to me, especially since it will last longer than the older one. Just wait a few days for it to be released.

25% more performance with 25% more money, i think so. If you have the money why not?

Plus you will get all the features that comes with the new platform and GPU (RX6000).

3950x using 4 CCX vs only 2 CCX with 5950x which means less latency.

What motherboard do you have?

You might need a new one to accommodate that new CPU, so the cost becomes higher.

Either way, wait for reviews to see if it's actually a decent performance increase.

yeah I was gonna upgrade my motherboard to because the one I have definitely can't run a ryzen 9. I was gonna get a GIGABYTE X570 AORUS Elite Wi-Fi as well as the processor but I think you're right i'm gonna wait to see the performance reviews and see if its worth.
