Does anyone think 128 GB of RAM is worth it?

 

I asked a similar question somewhere else and most people said 128 is overkill.

It wasn't for gaming it was for a large project. Not like a school one though.

Depends on your use, there is no way to say whether it's too much, just about right or not enough.

Lets say for working on a 2TB project. I thought the large ram might be good for some extra speed on the pc but i just started building pcs so I don't know if it will matter that much

"2 TB project" doesn't really mean anything, it depends on how is the memory being used by your project. If you're talking about e.g., video editing, you don't typically keep those files loaded in RAM, so something like 32-64 GB will be more than enough for most home/hobbyist uses.

You need to spend a lot of time watching Youtube videos from Jay, Kyle, Paul, Linus, HU, etc.

 

Lurk here a lot as well.  Good ways to learn and understand what you seem to have an interest in.

That amount of RAM is generally used by servers and stuff like that.

 

For a normal user between 32 and 64GB is enough. I recommend 32GB right now as DDR5 is going to be released soon and 64GB only if you're absolutely sure you need that much RAM.

I think you mean 16 and 32, not 32 and 64.  No normal user needs between 32 and 64GB of RAM, specialist users do who actually work and produce.

 

General rules of thumb:

 

8 is minimum

16 is generally the norm for gaming/streaming

32 for heavily modded gaming and content

64 for dedicated workstations

128 for commercial users / servers

I have 16GB and they're not quite enough without virtual ram. I consider 32 GB to be the sweet spot considering there are also newer and newer games being released which will use up more and more ram.

Are you constantly using over 16GB RAM?  What games are you playing?
