3300X unless targetting high framerate gaming with a top-end GPU.

Of couse, depending on pricing and availability. The 3300X is a rare find.

3300X is fine for gaming in most cases, so if you're interested in saving money it's not a bad buy. You can also put it in a cheap B550 motherboard and upgrade to 5000 series Ryzen whenever you want.

In that case, I'd side with the 3300X, unless the 3600 is a cheap upgrade (up to 20 USD or so?)

the 3300x is better in games than the 3600 at stock b/c of the higher core clock.

As I'm sure you know, it depends on the game. Most modern games take advantage of the additional cores, and it seems to be a theme going forward.

Most games the 3600 pulls ahead, and those where the 3300X leads, it isn't by much. (This is also a much more powerful GPU than what OP is suggesting, which I why I suggest the cheaper option of the two.)
