Hi. I have the asus pce-AC56 PCIe card. the only problem with it beeing AC (5ghz) is that i only get the N (2.4ghz) connection, which is slowing my speeds. also whenever i download the drivers for the card it will constantly disconnect and reconnect so i can only use it when i plug and play without beeing able to use its utility tool.

any help on how i can enable my pc to read it as an AC connection? i can't access my router as i live in a building. my laptop connects to AC so i think it's already enabled in the settings on the router if that helps.

motherboard rog-strix z490-F which is AC compatible. have i simply installed the card in the wrong slot somehow?

Just to confirm, when you connect via 5GHz, the connection shows as AC, but when you connect via 2.4GHz the connection shows as N? If so, that is the correct outcome, because AC only brought improvements to the 5GHz band. All AC devices uses the N standards when using 2.4GHz. Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) will bring improvements to 2.4GHz as well as 5GHz.

Looking to buy GTX690, other multi-GPU cards, or single-slot graphics cards:

Okay, i'm sorry! it appears its randomly connected to the 5ghz band now, i checked this earlier today and it was stuck at the N connection... i guess my problem is fixed then. thanks

Hi. a little update. it is back to the N connection now, which i found is way more unstable. is there a way to make it permanently stick to AC?

Do you use a single SSID for both bands, or is there separate names for 2.4GHz and 5GHz? Like "Name" and "Name_5", or "Name-2.4" and "Name-5"?

nope. its the exact same name, and only one connection showing up. f.example my laptop is always connected to AC and is very stable with speeds. i suffer with alot of lag on this pc where i keep switching between N and AC where almost all of the time i am connected to N only

I think i figured it out. i had to go into device manager and change my "band preference" to 802.11a. which uses 5ghz. its connected to AC now :)

802.11a is not the same as 802.11ac. Yes, both work on 5GHz, but 802.11a still has a speed limit of 54Mbps, just like 802.11b. Actually, they're both around the same age: ancient!

If you want to force your devices to connect to your WiFi 5 signal, only allow N/AC or AC at the wireless router's radio settings.
