So I have this GIGABYTE 2080Ti that randomly just stopped working , PC won't boot with it plugged in, and it's out of warranty , so I'm kinda stuck fixing it.
I should note I have PCB repair experience and tools, so I should be able to fix it... Assuming I can find what's wrong with it; that's my current issue.
I don't have any experience with how graphics cards work on a component level... So far I've tried measuring around the boards coils , and from what I can gather with no prior knowledge

it seems like I have a short to ground on what I think is on the 5V line... But I', not sure what component is supposed to do what on the board. I tried injecting 5V into the shorted coil ( figured 5v is safe considering they're either 5v or 12v )

but I couldn't get anything to heat up enough for me to notice alcohol evaporating. Can anyone help? I'm also willing to ship out for a repair ( located in Toronto Canada )

Should note previous owner said it just turned off one day and didn't turn back on , the cards led's and fans power up , and the core even gets warm to the touch

I hate to say it but you're probably better off just replacing it. I haven't really seen GPU repair places, and I doubt they'd be cheap.

Good luck though!

I bought the thing dead for $100 and I'm currently struggling with my 1080Ti , so I'm in a hard spot! I'd much rather spend a couple hundred bucks even for a repair than at least a grand for a new card 😧

Well I mean...you'd probably buy a used one for around $600.

If you sent it off to get repaired I'd imagine it'd cost more than a couple hundred, otherwise everyone would be buying dead cards off eBay to get repaired 🤷‍♂️

There's a reason dead ones are priced the way they are...

You could try sending it in to Gigabyte to see if they'd even look at it, but I'd imagine you'd be looking at $100 - $150 just for that.

Unfortunately they're all $900+ used where I am 😧 , and you'd be surprised, I buy dead macbooks all the time for like $20 and a simple q-tip and alcohol fixes many of them , this one I just managed to see a friends post saying his card died, and I just offered him $100 for it , im sure he would have taken anything tbh , and yeah I'm thinking about contacting gigabyte, but do they offer out of warranty repairs?

Right, but you can also find countless places that offer Macbook repair, meaning it's often a relatively easy thing to do and that there's profit to be made.

You don't see the same thing with GPUs, and as such, one can assume that it's simply not worth doing.

I'd just buy a cheap GPU like a 1070, and wait for the 3070's to be available then.

Yeah fair enough; good point, mind you a big part of it is that schematics for MacBook's are widely available where there doesn't seem to be any for graphics cards, which would make it as easy as reading for anyone who could read schematics , but that's not to say there's not people who have a big enough understanding of components / enough experience with graphics cards to know how they work! I've seen plenty of videos that ALMOST fix my problem, but they all ended up being on different variants of the card with different components , which means there must be more people than we both think that just * get it *

I mean technically anyone with a FLIR camera and a multimeter could at least find where the issue is , I just don't have access to any thermal cameras :( , a short to ground is generally easy enough to find by measuring resistance around the board, but I just don't have enough experience with shorts to ground to personally track down the area! :(
