Stupidly slow network transfer speeds?

orangecat

So to make a long story short I have 2 computers connected over a 1 gigabit network connection and I'm trying to copy some large files over from one SSD to another. Problem is it's going super slow for no good reason. The device that has the files is a gaming laptop that I know is fast enough for a full 1 gig transfer speed but the SSD im reading the files off is hitting 100% active time and only transferring the files at about 10mbps. When I run a disk benchmark I saturate the SATA interface and the speeds are fine so I doubt the issue is related to the SSD itself.

Does anyone know what might be causing this issue?

Both computers are running Windows 10 and none of the storage disks or network interfaces are bottlenecks.

What kind of files are we talking? Is it a big folder with thousands of little files or one big video for example?

Because that can really drive your speeds down.

Also, are you saying you get 10 megabit/s or megabyte/s? A lot of people confuse it so i want to make sure. Either is slow though.

I'm copying a bunch of ISO files. Around 2GB each. And yes I'm getting 10 megabytes per second transfer speeds. The folder only has maybe 25 files in it.

  1. What are the specs of the source and destination PCs?
  2. What kind of ethernet cable category are you using? Pre-made or custom-crimped?
  3. Is each PC's ethernet card negotiating a gigabit link?
  4. What router or switch are your computers connected to?
  5. Are you sure there's no other network activity at the time of file transfer?
  6. Have you tried using TeraCopy or RoboCopy?
