upgrade MB + CPU advices needed

Go to solution Solved by boggy77,

just because you have a e-atx case, doesn't mean you need an e-atx motherboard. they are pretty rare. get a atx motherboard instead.

that being said, amd just announced the ryzen 5000 series which promises to finally beat intel in gaming.

with your budget, you should be able to get the 5900x and a good x570 motherboard, like the asus tuf or msi tomahawk.

Hello boys, i'm not sure if it the right way to ask a question, so please if it is not feel free to let me now so i do it the right way.

Well to begin with, Hello there, i am i need of advices for a combo motherboard (e-atx) CPU, arround 700€ total and at the moment i am not sure witch of amd or intel is the right way to go,

atm i am using a Rampage 10 anniversary edition paired with a i7-6850K CPU, (with 8*2 gbs of 2133MHz memory), (i'll replace the memory after, i kbow that 2133 isnt good (actually they are 3333 but one of the stick give me bsod when i put it at his right clock)

-Usage gaming mostly, VM's and renders

-case Lian Li lancool digital (e-atx)

-Using a 2070 Super

-idk the name of it but i have a really big air cooler from noctua (the ugly one but very efficient)

-nvme 970 pro 512gb + 1 to samsung ssd

needs : i love to play with overclock settings, so a good bios would be appreciated,

Before you answer, please thank you for the time you gave me.

e-atx boards for am4 and intel 10th gen are very expensive.

would a atx motherboard with integrated wifi work for you?

E-ATX just means WIDER board, like a couple fingers worth of extra wide.

mATX is the version with just 2 pci-e slots,  regular ATX gives you 5-6 pci-e slots. It's quite possible to have SLI or Crossfire with regular ATX boards.

x570 allows splitting the pci-e x16 into 2 pci-e x8, so SLI would work, just filter the motherboard selection to the ones which advertise SLI.

This being said, SLI is more or less DEAD, future nVidia video cards will not support SLI, and the newer nVidia cards don't even have SLI connectors.

It's pointless to limit your choices on the SLI thing.

For wireless, that can go in any pci-e slot, so you can easily repurpose a pci-e x1 slot for a wireless card.

Pick a good B550 or x570 motherboard - there's some B550 motherboards that are BETTER from a hardware point of view than x570 boards..

And wait a few weeks and get a 5900x processor or something in that range.

seems good, + it has 2 nvme slots, could you share me the difference betwin the 550 series and the 570 series ?

x570 has more (and faster) pcie 4 lanes. for the normal user, that doesn't matter.

this is from msi's website:

WHO SHOULD UPGRADE TO THE X570 PLATFORM?

Some professionals may need even more power and extensibility than what the B550 platform can offer. For such professionals, MSI’s X570 motherboards are the ideal choice. If any of the following apply to you, the X570 platform is a better choice:
  • You use more than 4 USB 3.1 devices
  • You use more than 6 SATA devices
  • You use more than 3 Gen 4 M.2 SSDs

ok then, Thanks a lot for the replies, i will go with a x570 then because of the M.2s and the USB, i need externals drive plugged for work, and the 3*M.2 give longevity to the MB, anyway i'll look at the prices before making my choice.

Thaks again for your time

I would suggest you to go for Ryzen 7 5800X great CPU i think it could cost around 400€ in combination with some b550 motherboard that cost around 200€ you can fit in your budget.

thnaks for the advice, anyway i dont need it for now, i just would like to upgrade, i think the prices for 5800 will drop when 5900 will come out
