Hey everyone. I've currently got an i7 4790k paired with a GTX 980 Ti. I've been thinking about upgrading at some point for Cyberpunk 2077. If I upgraded my CPU, I would probably go with the i7 10700k mostly because I can reuse my current waterblock. And if I upgraded my current GPU, I'd probably go with the RTX 3080. I play at 1440p. Which upgrade path would give me the more substantial performance increase, CPU or GPU? Thanks so much for your help!

a 4790k is a decent but admittedly a old CPU. I'd say upgrade the GPU first, and down the line do the cpu.

I am NOT a professional and a lot of the time what I'm saying is based on limited knowledge and experience. I'm going to be incorrect at times.

Honestly keep your 4790k (oc it if you haven't already) and just get a gpu upgrade. It's still a good cpu and from what we've seen from ryzen 5000 it's basically matching intel at the very least (again wait for reviews) or you might as well just skip the generation and get the new platform from amd/intel with ddr5 and all that goodness.

i had 4770K 4.3ghz with 980ti at 1440p and it played well in games BACK THEN i then i upgraded to a 1080ti later on and it proved to be too much for the CPU in many open world games...so a 3080 is absolutely out of range for this CPU in CPU intensive (modern demanding beautiful) games.

I would get the new ryzen processors when they come out and by then good GPU's should be available. So basically...save some money and hold on for basically a new computer..
