GPU works but no display

So I have a MSI 550b tomahawk motherboard. It does have integrated graphics with the right CPU, however the CPU i bought does not have integrated graphics. I am trying to use an EVGA GT220 (its 10 years old but works). I have not installed windows yet as I am still waiting on my new GPU in the mail. When starting the PC I just get a black screen, I think my motherboard might be trying to boot the integrated graphics but the GPU might not be supported? I thought a 2.0 card should work with a 3.0 slot. Is there anything I can do? or did I buy a defective motherboard

Yeah the GT220 works, I also have a gt210 that works. I tested them both in my old computer.

No, first time I booted I got a message saying my display was not supported but I think it was referring to the internal GPU in the mobo bc my ryzen does not support it. I originally got an error message with the gt220, so I thought I would try the gt210 which is actually newer and less used. I then stopped getting the message but then the screen just goes black. No bios picture or anything. I think my pc is trying to boot the internal gpu on the mobo? Ryzen 3700x is supported on this mobo just not internal display.

Not till next week weds at earliiest. Depends on how fast UPS goes. And 2.0 cards should work in 3.0 slots so idk where this issue is coming from.

Unless its just the fact that the GPU is 10+ years and the mobo is brand new

I took the battery out of the mobo and holding down the power button to reset anything that might of set its self to the internal GPU on the mobo. I thnk thats where the issue is coming from bc the motherboard does have a built in gpu but only is supported by certain CPU's that work with it.

there is no internal gpu. the cpus thet work with it have gpus on the cpu itself, and that is pushed through the mobo hdmi/dvi/wahtever.

Ok, yeah it didn't work anyways. Still a black screen.... I really hope this brand new mobo isnt defective ....

did you unplug the psu from the mobo? also, try watching a tv show episode or something before trying again.

Ok now I am getting the error message, sorry couldn't remember off hand what it was. This is says when I plug it into the 4.0 slot. 3.0 slot is just black with nothing but anyways this is the error message; There is no graphics out put protocol support detected in this graphics card, recommend to replace with GOP/UEFI compatible graphics card or using Integrated graphics from CPU for having a normal function. So it sounds like this card is too old for the motherboard? But i could of sworn it should work in the 3.0 slot bc it is backwards compatible.
