I like plantuml for, well, uml... but uml isn't really intended as a generic planning system, it's pretty specific to software or at least software-adjacent tasks.

BEFORE YOU MOVE THIS TOPIC... this is software for programmers & I believe it'd suit better here. No one but programmers really use this stuff. If you think this topic should be moved to Software, that'd be acceptable. It's not really necessary in programming anymore.

 

Now for the topic at hand...

 

What software do you use for pre-production & planning your software?

I'm looking for something where I can draw pictures & have text associated like a notebook. I don't want to use a photoshop esque program as every page would be a different file making things quite unreasonable imo to look through. I am using a pen & notebook at the moment, but want something on the computer.

 

Do you guys use anything for this kind of design work & planning?

 

 

What about for UML?

I found 2 great programs on sourceforge called NClass for class designs (name of class, inheritance, variables & methods/functions) then I use another free program called Violet UML for everything else. Psuedo code, activity diagrams, so on.

 

Is there any all in 1 package program for this kind of stuff?

For game design there is a great program called Articy:Draft but it's more for "I want to design a story game or D&D campaign" than "I want to design software."

 

 

I am looking for a feature rich program as I am designing a software ecosystem in which phones will remote into servers & the data can be modified via web browsers on laptops & desktops. This software will require extensive planning imo & I want to stretch what I've learned about the software lifecycle in school. If there's anything I've learned about working on projects with others it's that by failing to prepare, we are preparing to fail.

Many people use Visio for UML design. I prefer Draw.io as it's free and in the cloud so no worries about installing it

The teams I've worked on use Figma for UI/UX prototyping (it's creat since you can have the clients experiment it and see if the usage flow feels nice).

 

For diagrams it's mostly Draw IO, where we do some sketches of architecture and microservices. I'm yet to see any company that actually goes full blown UML stuff other than old, big corps.

I like plantuml for, well, uml... but uml isn't really intended as a generic planning system, it's pretty specific to software or at least software-adjacent tasks.

 

If you want a notebook replacement try onenote?

I give Figma a whole hearted recommendation. Used it for the first time during my UI/UX course and impressed the crap out of our instructors and classmates when they saw the final prototype. It's very easy to get an interactive model working quickly because of how easy it is to connect elements and pages together. However it can get a bit messy if you're not careful like we weren't (we were pressed for time so that went out the window).

Honestly I just write out in comments what I plan for a thing to do and just start writing code.

 

I normally head for the functional style (nodejs) so each step is a function or a combination of functions. Which can then be piped together.

 

Normally its a bit messy but I do a refactor at the end once my logic is in place.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. There's a lot of cool software listed in this thread.

 

I was looking for a type of "notebook" replacement & OneNote seems to have everything I need. I can make as many pages as I want & subsections.

 

I will still draw my code designs in a UML type program. Likely NClass or VioletUML as I already have them installed.

 

One Note lets you create many pages & equivalents of "chapters" for filing. Easy to draw & add in text as well as many other information. It doesn't overburden the user with UI tools which is also great.

If I wasn't to use my existing UML programs, Visio would be my next software I would have obtained for diagram creation.

 

If anyone else has additional information, you're welcome to post it up, but as for me, the thread has run its course.

 

EDIT:

Bonus for One Note... You can get it for free on Windows 10 with the Microsoft Store. "OneNote for Windows 10." It was advertised on the Microsoft website that you can also get it for free on Mac with the App Store. It's supposedly available on Android and iOS if you're doing stuff on the go or with a tablet.
