A friend asked me for help with building a computer for his lab work. Apparently he uses it for calculations where they use the GPU to run something. Before I try to understand better what he means I wondered if anyone here has any idea? He works in a lab in a university and used to run calculations on CPUs but says that they are now switching to doing it on GPUs. Does anyone have experience wit this? What kind of questions can I ask him to figure out what he needs?

need to know what software, what budget, and whether they have a system they are replacing, what were the specs of that system

Just give us the budget and we'll figure out the best possible specs.

If GPU is the most important part, you should prioritize the best GPU you can get, that is RTX 3090 (if you can't afford the $5000 Quadro RTX 8000).
