The WAN show 2020-09-18 - Apple not taking outside ideas

eldakka

On the comment regarding Apple not taking ideas from outside the company, I disagree, because that is one of the main purposes of the Apple Appstore.

Apple uses apps by third parties released on the appstore to mine for ideas. If an app becomes popular, Apple will either:

  1. Incorporate the functionality into iOS and ban that third party app from the store because it is (now!) just replicating existing functionality; or
  2. Release their own version on the store, undercutting the original developers app by Apple not having to add their own 30% cut on top of the apps price, thus being able to undercut the original app by the 30% appstore fee that Apple doens't have to pay.

That is not an example of Apple taking ideas from outside the company, that is called trending competition.

Taking what is popular and creating a product to compete against directly, not because it was asked for but because that is what is or was trending. Apple is not known for it innovations, except for one thing, the iPhone.

Taking feedback from your customers and basing decisions and creating content from that feedback is taking ideas from outside the company.

You have it backwards my friend. Apple [even in the early days] has always been focused on proprietary'ism and has been very reluctant to draw on customer feedback, had they been, Apple would look very much different than it does today.

This is known as proprietary.

Couldn't agree with you more.
