NVME Education

Hey all,

 

I'm pretty familiar with SSD and mechanical drives, what brands are low/high end and what use case they fit for mechanical.

For NVME drives I'm uneducated.

 

I'm building a new system at the end of the year, I intend on maxing out the motherboard which we can assume has 1-2 slots.

Is there a range for what are quality versus "meh" NVME storage?

 

PCPP seems to love the Samsung 970 EVO, I think it's expensive. Does Crucial, WD, etc...put out a good product?

The best current bang-for-buck offering is the ADATA SX8200 Pro when it comes to 1-2TB. It has very similar performance to the Samsung 970 Evo but is a lot cheaper.

I agree on the ADATA SX8200 Pro, it performs at the full advertised speed. Really happy with it and given that prices seem to drop, I will get another one as well. Crucial, WD, HP, Intel and Seagate are also good brands for NVME storage devices. Look for drives that come with DRAM caching and at a read speed of at least 2000 MB/s.

I know it's flash(?) storage, but are they reliable?

The intent of these drives are OS and primary filesystem stuff. Everything else will go external or cloud storage.

Your not wrong. Samsung drives are overpriced.

Like @Stahlmann98 said the ADATA SX8200 Pro is the best bang for the buck for decent capacity.

 

I am not familiar with Crucial but WD and Silicon Power make some very good NVME ssd.

I have not had an NVME ssd die on me. And my oldest one is arround 4.5 years old. There is no significant difference between when it was new and 4.5 years old.

Of course they're reliable, else they wouldn't recommend and use them.

 

There are a ton of wiki's and YT videos on the subject of NVMe, which are just another version of NAND flash.

There is no "high end" brand. Almost all brands make a garbage SSDs and some do also very high end SSDs. 

 

For example the ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro is a very good NVMe 3.0 SSD especially for the price. 

But you should not touch the SX6300 because it is absolutely terrible SSD that shouldn't exist. 

 

Just do research for drives on a certain price point and you will find few that will suit your use case. 

 

Or... just grab the popular ones that also tend to be more expensive while not actually being better that some cheaper lesser known ones.
