so a Ryzen 7 3700x won't run the speed very well?

most Zen 2 CPU runs 3600MHz on single rank just fine, though it's only officially supported up to 3200MHz. I've seen some chips not being able to go above 3200MHz, albeit quite rare.

it's up to luck, but 3600MHz with 1800 FCLK should be achievable in most zen 2 CPUs.

expect to lose frequency as memory rank goes up (more sticks/capacity in each slot)

AMD stated that 3900x only support up to 2666 on quad rank 128gb configs. read it in a reddit post

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

So go Ryzen 7 3700x

with 3200mhz cl16 Ram

yea would be fine for gaming

you could consider 3600 CL16 ram if they're not much more expensive

or 3600 CL18 RAM if you're doing bandwidth intensive tasks (games arent bandwidth intensive)

3200 C16 ~= 3600 C18 in term of latency

I wouldn't worry about going with 3600MHz.  You're not gonna have any trouble with that in terms of FCLK.

A crappy mobo and RAM kit might not play well though, but I wanna say I really only saw that problem with ASUS TUF and 3600 16-19-19 RAM kits.

-snip-

Are you trying to say that CL18 has higher bandwidth than CL16?  Because that's how that came across.

What's your budget for RAM?

3600 vs 3200 that he showed

should've made it clearer

So then you know 3600C16 is better than 3600C18 in terms of bandwidth right?

hmm, care to educate me? (not sarcasm, genuinely wanting to learn)

i just know bandwidth = MT/s x 8bytes x efficiency

lower CL = higher efficiency i assume, though by how much?

is it as much diff as 3200 vs 3600? (around 13% diff i think)

Well I don't know about the formula you're using to figure out the theoretical bandwidth, but I can tell you that lower CL will result in higher bandwidth.

And if comparing kits with matching latencies then you always want to go with the faster kit as it will have higher bandwidth and also the other benefits it brings to Ryzen platforms.

You can buy a very, very good 16GB kit for that price or a very good 32GB kit for $220.
