Using 3080 as egpu?

Mostly, because they are talking about the new memory architecture where they load game assets directly to gpu. Not sure if thunderbolt 3 is that good and if it can handle it? Unless I have understood this all wrong.

It should. However it's best you wait for release and benchmarks/people with hands on experience to confirm. Also keep in mind running a GPU such as that as an eGPU will limit it's performance. Same thing if you were to use a 2080ti in one.

Yes but you will experience bandwidth issues depending on what port you connect it to, which varies depending on what laptop you have. I guess I am not sure how it would suffice for the power delivery as well. Best to wait for reviews.

I have the new xps 13 which I bought mostly for work related things. But I'd like to have a gaming setup at home, and so looking into options. Looking through youtube reviews for 2080, it seems that there isnt that much difference if connected directly to an external monitor. Maybe 5% in extreme cases. But yeah, would wait for some 3080 reviews on this.

Okay so you should have the thunderbolt bandwidth, but considering there may be a performance upgrade even from PCIe 3.0 to 4.0 this could change. Reviews will provide the answers we need!

 

Great laptop BTW, I love my XPS 13! Should be a solid setup with an eGPU. What specs is your XPS? Do you plan to game off the laptop display or an external monitor?

Yes! It's amazing. I have the i7-1065G7 with 16 gb mem and 512gb ssd. On the external monitor . I have an xbox too which I will most probably upgrade to xsx come november. But I also do some deep learning stuff and PC has some great games too which are not on the xbox. Currently I have an old laptop with 960m graphics on it, which I converted to a deep learning training server. But this should be a massive upgrade on that .

Perfect setup! I love a laptop setup docked into an eGPU with a monitor. I would go that route but I just love my desktops way to much! My bother has a nice setup with his Razer Blade Stealth and my old GTX 980Ti in the Razer Core with a 32in display. 

 

Sounds awesome, GPU upgrade should go a long way!

I thought I'd just chip in here... I'm a bit of a no post lurker so hello all!

 

Found this an interesting thread as I'm in a very similar situation to OP.  I've got an XPS 13 with the same specs and a Razer Core X all on order which should be with me over the next few days.  I fully intend to buy a 3080 as soon as they are available here in the UK and get it set up so I can play games through an Acer X34 monitor.  Happy to be the guinea pig and report back with experiences if you want to see someone else take the risk first!

OMG Thats amazing That's a nice monitor you got there. I'd love to know how it goes with your setup. Good luck and I hope everything goes smooth. I have some doubts related to the bandwidth, but I am hoping the performance wont be hit too much and that even with a performance hit, it should do much better than 2080ti

I would like to have desktop too. But unfortunately money is a constraint. But that's my plan. To get 3080 now and use it as an egpu. Then eventually and gradually I can save up to build a pc. Then the 3080 should slot right in . Hey the stealth laptop is very good too. I had that as my other option before I went for XPS. For me though availability of service centers is a huge deal. And ultimately sided with dell as they have excellent support.

When reviews come out I would look at the 3070, might be more in-line with what your need.

 

He liked it at first but had many issues with it, RMA'd it twice so good in theory, but not in practice. He wishes he got an XPS as well.

Struggling to get a 3080 at the moment (like everyone else it seems!).  Will update once I can finally ge my hands on one.
