Synology PSUs

Hi everyone :)

Anyone knows the difference between these 2 Synology PSUs?

 - 250W_3

 - 250W_5

They look the same to me but I guess they are different in some way.

Thank you very much in advance

Both your links are leading to the same place.

250W_3 is for the RS1219+, RS815+, DS2015xs, DS1815+, DS1813+, DS1515+, DS1513+, DS1817, DS1517, DX513

250W_5 is for the DS1621xs+, DS1819+, DVA3219

They seem to be physically the same except for the fan design. I would assume they are interchangeable, though Synology seems to indicate that each 250W_X PSU is for a different set of models.

Make sure to quote me or use @PorkishPig to notify me that you replied!

Tx for the heads up, I just fixed the link

I also have the impression that they are interchangeable. I was wondering if there was any known reason why they wouldn't.

I don't know, they look the same. Maybe it's just a new PSU model number for newer NAS models. If you really want to know you could try asking Synology.

The 250-3 model is Seasonic SS-250SU  standard flexATX  1U power supply.    12v x 18A , 5v x 17A , 3.3v x 14A (max 110v on 3.3v+5v) , 216w max on 12v

The 250-5 model is Delta DPS-250AB-44B  standard 1U power supply.  12v x 17A , 5v x 12A , 3.3v x 6A  (max 60w on 3.3v+5v) , 204w max on 12v   (240w all 3 combined)

So yeah, the Seasonic is in theory better.

Should be interchangeable but who knows if they customized the pinouts in some way.

My guess is they simply ordered a few thousands units of seasonic and later got a better deal on delta or seasonic was busy making psus for others and they switched to delta... so they just made two different SKUs for warranty and tracking and other reasons. They should be interchangeable like I said.

thank you so much :)

How did you obtain this information?

What you say makes sense and I believe the pinouts is also identical.

Thanks again

Best,

I went to the synology page using those links you gave and each product page gives EAN and UPC codes

I then googled the EAN code and found a parts store with synology power supplies which also had some pictures of the units... so i zoomed on the psu and read the model number from the label

The Delta psus also have a very uncommon label on the fans, and the delta logo is easy to spot and unique ... so you can see on the synology page at 250_w the white and gray label on the tiny fan, and you can also see on pictures of power supplies. for example :

some picture on ebay after searching for the 250W_5 unit:

the picture on synology page :

Seasonic often uses Adda fans, which have a yellow/mustard label and the top label is often white and blue

  • 9 months later...

Sorry to necro, but just made an account to caution others against trying to fit a 250w_5 into a DS1515+. Unfortunately there is a difference in the cable lengths, which may require an additional extension for the long , 24 (12x2) pin cable (edit: ATX).

Seems to power on otherwise. Will update if I run into any other concerns.
