started a disk partition and now disk management is broken

I started shrinking a volume on a 1TB hard drive forgetting that it takes forever and i closed the disk management utility and now when i open it back up it just says "Connecting to virtual disk service". I want to cancel the partition but literally the whole internet says you will corrupt your drive (if you shutdown). How long will the is take i shrunk the volume by 50GB?

It should have been a fast process. You can try command prompt and DISKPART, then list disk or volume to check if it's really done.
