I am moving off to college here in a few days, and am going to be taking my computer with me, and I was wondering what I should be worrying about in terms of damage or loss of data. I do not have any packaging that I can put my computer in or put in my computer to protect my parts, but I am planning on taking my graphics card out to make sure that it or the PCI-e slot it is in doesn't get damaged. Most of my stuff is on SSDs, but I do also have a hard drive that I keep some stuff on and am worried about if any damage could happen to the platters or drive heads. It is properly secured in a drive bay with rubber standoffs, but with how I plan on keeping my computer during the drive, the hard drive would be kept vertically. Is there anything else I should do or do differently to make sure little or no damage is done?

removing the GPU is a good choice

i would also suggest removing your CPU cooler if it's a big tower heatsink, AIO are fine if you used all the screws to keep the radiator in place, stock coolers are also fine

as for hard disk, dont worry too much about it unless you're going on gravel road

put a cushion under your PC and make sure it doesnt slip/flip and bang around in the car and you should be good

also, having a backup isnt a bad idea anyways

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

Since you’re driving, just make sure the system is secure and not moving a lot or bumping into things. It should be fine though. If you still have the box that the case came in, pack it in there.

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.

Quote or tag me so I can see your response

I'm going to lay it on its back on the floor of the passenger side of my car as my car is small and should have my computer fit snugly with little room for movement. I'll also take Moonzy's advise and put some cushioning under it so it's not directly on the floor.

Good idea, you shouldnt need to worry about anything.

When I moved to college breifly, I put on the floor of the back seats, and reclinded the passenger seat to secure it in place. I removed the GPU, and put it back in the box it came in, which sat on the passenger seat with the seat belt around it.

Also try and cover it with something so it doesn't sit in direct sunlight.

Maybe stop by FedEx, UPS, Target, WalMart, etc. and try to pick up a little of the plastic bubble wrap stuff that you can put inside the case.  I'm all for removing the GPU too.  If you find the bubble stuff, put that on the inside and then put the cover back on the case.  That should pretty much keep things from moving around any.

And most of all, no drag racing the trains down the tracks.  The railroad ties will drive the cars suspension nuts not to mention what it would do to your pooter.  Safe driving, may the force be with you.
