keep the system as is, plop the 8600K in, check bios version

if everything seems right, plop the 9900k in, if it doesnt boot then it's fair to say it's faulty

Hi, I recently brought a i9 9900k to upgrade my i5 8600k. After replacing the cpu I can not get the pc to post.
I've updated the bios, reset to default settings and tried booting with just 1 stick of ram and no gpu but still no luck. I also put the old cpu back in and it booed up with no problems.

The new cpu is second hand but i've been assured it works so hopefully i'm just missing something.
My specs:

  • Gigabyte z370p d3 (Rev 1.0) with bois version F14
  • 4x4gb teamgroup vulcan ram
  • Reference 1080ti
  • Corsair RM850i power supply
  • Hyper x 240gb boot drive
  • seagate barracuda 2tb drive
  • WD m.2 500gb drive

Any help would be appreciated

Its second hand and i have no proof of purchase?

You bought a 9900k? These days?

The reason it doesn't work is Z370 DOESN'T SUPPORT 9TH GEN CPUS EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE THE SAME SOCKET

Yes i didn't wanna buy a new motherboard.
Its on the supported cpu list with a bios update

How much did you pay for the 9900k?

I know it's on the supported CPU list but it's not a Gigabyte limitation it's an Intel limitation. This is why z390 exists.

£320

I'm not sure I understand. How can it be on the supported list then?

you could have bought a B450 Tomahawk MAX and a Ryzen 5 3600

and is also an inferior CPU in many ways, especially gaming

there wouldn't be a reason for Z390 to exist

afaik, z390 has better VRMs averagely to deal with the 9th gen's 8 core cpus, but the z370 boards should deal with it just fine, though VRMs might need some cooling if the VRMs isnt good

as for feature differences, i think USB and wifi standards are higher? dont quote me on this

if everything works on the 8600k, but not the 9900k after a bios update, the 9900k is probably faulty

There's no way this can be legal, it's essentially false advertising.

what is?

it saying 8th gen supported in the product page but supports up to 9th gen?

that's guilty of not updating their product page when 9th gen launched, at best

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

Thanks for saying pretty much everything I was thinking!
I was hoping i'd just missed something. I really don't want to have to deal with returning it but looks like I may have to.
