Linus: the reason that Tesla has this QA process is because different people have different standards of quality. Some people don't care about lumps or discolorations in the paint, or can't see them. So why pay someone to QA that when the buyer might not notice? Their QA policy is purely based on cost saving anything you miss, rather than spending the money themselves to ensure everyone gets the same quality. This is not new, Tesla has done this for years in many different aspects. I loved the concept of a tesla, but at this point, I'll wait for Toyota to make a tesla-like vehicle because their anti-right to repair, anti-consumer actions are just too much to bear.

like i dont care for small imperfections in the paint or whatever but when a panel is misaligned, and the speaker is falling off, and wires are sticking out, and the seat wouldnt sit flush with each other, and the inside panels are falling off (all problems with model y) then thats not acceptable

Apparently there were also cases where a car rolled off the line with light wood trim on the driver door card and dark wood trim on the passenger door card. Surely someone on the line noticed that...

But paint issues with Tesla go beyond lumps and discolorations. That stuff is present with more established manufacturers like Mazda where their Mazda 2 orange peels on the lower quarter of the vehicle. But their paint has been historically thin and pathetic. You might as well skip the paint options and just wrap the car with vinyl after the fact. And I think Snazzy Labs goes over this quite nicely when he did a update on his model 3.

Many automaker's paints are dinky and terribly applied. Japanese automakers usually don't apply much of anything (if you want proof of that, come to the South and look at what cars have fading paint and what cars don't). Hell, even something as decent as a Chevy SS has thin paint that chips at the sight of a pebble.

It's honestly something that slightly annoys me, even if it is, ultimately, cosmetic. Why not spare the extra cash to apply a little more paint and a better coating?

Yea, Tesla is a car brand that I really want to like but the QA, repair procedures, and right to repair stuff just make it hard to do so. My Honda has lousy paint but Tesla is on a whole other level. Chevy Bolt looks like a good option if your looking for an alternative and my last Chevy had good paint too! lol. I gave the Bolt a lot of consideration last time I got a car but I drive across state regularly so most electric vehicles just don't have the range for me yet.

Well I can think of a couple reasons.  It increases their profit margins.  And at-least for US automakers, auto worker's unions have them by the gonads with demands for high wages and exceptionally good benefits.  Cuts down on what they can invest elsewhere.

But yeah, it still kinda just comes down to profit I think.

Am I right in thinking the wrap is because it's cheaper than having the car repainted? Or does Tesla build their cars from materials that paint just hates sticking to?
