XLR cable and balanced sound

Kasenumi

Hello everyone

I currently have Beyerdynamic DT990 600 ohm headphones and Geshelli Labs Enog 2 Pro DAC which has both balanced and unbalanced inputs.

My AMP (Monoprice Liquid Spark)  died after 3 months of use so RMA ended with a refund and I need a new AMP. I am thinking about trying balanced AMP to pair with by balanced DAC. Due to some YouTube and Google research Enog 2 Pro DAC paired with Geshelli Labs Erish AMP offer a great quality of sound.

I know that balanced DAC and AMP are connected with XLR cables. But how do I connect DAC and AMP to my PC motherboard so I still have balanced sound? PC motherboard doesn't have XLR input.

Do I need to buy some other supportive device like Audio Interface??

After reading your post several times I'm still not sure what you're asking. You have a DAC (an external audio interface) with balanced outputs, you have to use 3 pin cables (+, - and GND) and then you need an amplifier with balanced inputs. That's everything. Why would you connect it back to your mainboard?

A "balanced" signal is basically the same as an unbalanced signal, with the exception of a third wire carrying an inverse signal additional to the positive signal line and the ground wire. This suppresses EMI and improves SNR.

DAC receives digital signal from the PC (or at least it should) so you don't have to worry about balanced cables between it and the PC.

unless you mod it, you cant run the 990 balanced due to how they are wired by nature you could risk breaking if you try to force it. if you can afford the eirish I would go for a asgard 3 instead as it is unbalanced but provides a ton of power and would pair better with the 990's as its is a smoother sounding amp but also unbalanced. but if you wanted to runa geshelli stack just grab the archel or change sidegrade/upgrade to a headphone that can be run balanced.

I am interested in purchasing a pair of speakers in a month or 2 so also thinking of having devices capable of delivering max potential from speakers I choose. I guess in that case speakers are plugged into XLR inputs of DAC...(not really a specialist on that so may be horribly wrong). If speakers cables are plugged into a DAC than I have XLR inputs on my Enog 2 Pro.
Pity that Liquid Spark died so quickly for me, it made treble smoother, like you told, music sounded better in general. Without an AMP harsh sounds like lightsabers, shooting, screaming, hissing or whispering hurt ears a bit.
About the alternatives to Geshelli and Schiit, what would you advice? Cheaping out probably was not a good idea...Think I'm going to choose one of them but if you know any comparable options, please let me know

the asgard 3 to me is the smoother sounding amp. not as motth as the liquid spark . the liquid spark is a very unique amp that way and nothing currently aside from tubes will smooth treble to that extent.  but the asgard 3 is a smoother sounding amp than says something like the archel , also has tons  of power for the power hungry 990.  if you really wanted to you could ultimately eq the sound of it.
