Hi everyone, so I've recently upgraded my gpu from a gtx1060 3gb to a gtx 1080 8gb.

This is my system: i5 9400f, 16gig ddr4 ram and the gtx 1080

so I think that my gpu is being bottlenecked by my cpu, so would it help if I upgraded to a i7 9700k. This is my bench mark in assassin's creed origins.

If you can see the gaps in my frames, this is where the screen freezes for a few seconds and then continues again. This never happened on my gtx 1060.

note:This only happens on Ubisoft games. Other games run a lot better

Thank you in advance for your reply

On a GTX 1080, it's not an enormous bottleneck generally.

However, AC games are hard on both components and a 1080 isn't really a fast card for that game either.

You'd be better off just holding out for a while with what you've got and adjust settings down.

Open up task manager while you are playing a Ubisoft game and look at the CPU useage % graph. If it's at or above 80% you need an upgrade, but don't buy a 9700k. Sell your 9400F and board and just buy a 3600 with a B450 Tomahawk MAX

I have to disagree with this in that a 3600, while faster, isn't really a large enough upgrade to really be worth it especially today with new tech just around the corner.

Given a 9400 and a GTX 1080 are still perfectly competent at gaming with some concessions, and assuming budget is a consideration by virtue of having a 9400 to begin with, it's probably smarter to just hold out until something REALLY good comes out instead of the 3600 half measure.

That's my 2c anyway.

Agree that a 3600 isn't massive over a 9400F it's move of the upgrade path you have later. @Rubain you rekon you can hold off two months until Zen 3 comes out then buy a 4600?

Sure i'll do that thanks for the reply guys, and to answer your question earlier, yes my cpu is at 100% all the time with the gpu at 50%. This is mostly with ubisoft games, namely assassin's creed origins and watch dogs 2. Could this not maybe be a software problem?

could be, google CPU usage on those specific games.

Those games typically are horribly optimized and have some other background stuff like anti-cheat that eat up cycles.

Is your RAM 2x8 or 1x16

It is 2x8, yeah I'm planing on reinstalling windows as I checked on reddit that it's definitely a software problem and as I don't know what I'll just reinstall windows to be safe
