I was given a 6 pin fan. I would like to use this fan but have no clue how to power it. How would I go about powering this fan, or am I better off just buying a 4 pin?

Do you happen to have a product name for this fan, or otherwise a picture?

It's very likely you're looking at a proprietary header, which won't work with a regular 4 pin PWM header.

It's also very likely they just varied a bit on the PWM standard (as in, the fan will definitely have a GND pin, probably +12V somewhere too and sense+PWM are obvious to have too). Maybe they just added some RGB stuff or something to the fan?

That one has fan and RGB cables combined. You would need controller from same brand to connect. Unless you can get one, that's worthless.

That looks proprietary as heck, don't think it would be possible to simply power from a PWM header.

Does it have any other cables on it too?

That is the only cable. I think you are right about the proprietary thing. I tried to find what company made the fan and was unsuccessful. I am just going to put it in a bin and pick up a normal fan.
