Do I need to play Witcher 1?

I want to play the witcher series but the first game's controls are terrible. I tried to play but it's so bad. I want to understand the story but I don't want to play the first game. Do I have to play first game to understand what's going on?

what do you mean by the controls being bad? like you can't change controls, to make them better?  i have never played the old witcher ganes so i cant help much but im gonna try to help

You can just watch a synopsis video, like this one, don't force yourself to play games that you don't want to play

I'm just wondering can I skip the first game does that make a lot of difference understanding the story.

And just watch the remainder of the story on YouTube. Then move on to Witcher 2 and 3

I recommend you play it. It's still lots of fun.

I got used to the controls pretty quickly. Sure, they are repetitive and really not a whole lot of fun, but you should play the Witcher 1 for the story anyway and not for the gameplay.

Just like in the Witcher 2 and 3 there are lots of little story snippets you might miss out on, if you're not going to play it.
