I've been spoiled by the solid connection I've had for 4 years, and the enterprise-level of quality at work, so when I've hit a snag, I begin to doubt myself.

Situation:

Home network, Arris modem, 75down/5up (xfinity) connected to Netgear R6080 router.

Systems are all wireless.

About 1 week ago I started to experience frequent disconnects to our Citrix mainframe at work (I'm working from home)

A basic ping to google shows multiple "request timed out" about 10-20% of the time.

When it does reach google, TTL is 117 and time is 20ms

So, packet loss. I run a pingplotter and confirm as such (pinging to google)

Using pingplotter again, I can ping my printer and NAS, with no issues.

Ping my router, no problems

Ping my Modem, again, no loss of data (also tested this wired, and reflashed my router with the latest firmware)

But step outside my home, 20% packet loss.

So...router good? Problem is xfinity?

Or is my thinking AFU?

If you run the same tests while directly connected to the router and then another test while directly connected to the modem using ethernet, do you get the same results?

All fixed, xfinity was borked at the master junction.

A new router was thankfully not needed

Glad this got solved. For me it came down to modem overheating

Home-oriented networking gear does run hot, I have mine in an area with active cooling, because I've been prepared for this issue.

I literally ziptied a 120mm fan to the side of it and I went from 300mbps to 950mbps :)

Ain't jury-rigging grand?

tis indeed, though paying 12$ for an outlet to molex converter fucking hurt. I have a spare bench PSU (voltages are shot to hell, but who cares if I'm just pushing 12v to a fan?), but it felt wrong to hotwire it for the pure purpose of cooling a modem :/ And really, what other option do I have? Does an adequately cooled consumer modem exist? This is an Arris 8200(?)

I am afraid I am not qualified to answer that, but given the basic shape of consumer modems all look alike, I'm inclined to say "no"
