i5 vs i7

So i was wondering if an i5 would be good for gaming for a couple years rather than  the i7 

Maybe games in the future will utilize the hyper-threading on the i7 then it would be worthwhile getting or just stick to the i5.

And how would the i5 cope on editing not extreme but just editing gameplays using lots of effects in sony vegas

i5, there is 1-2 fps increase with the i7, if you think more cores will help in the future get a 8320/8350

bang for buck the i5 over the i7. The i5 is great, i edit on my i3 2120 from time to time and its not too bad, i just go and do work or homework.

they lack support from amd, its probably safer to go with intel again these days due to the far superior chipsets.

Theres no real advantage of an i7 over an i5 for JUST gaming, but if you say want to make youtube videos, or are playing MMORPGs and will need to overclock to very high frequency to get optimal performance for your MMO games, then go with an i7, If you dont plan on using workstation programs on your rig and you're looking to just play games(non mmo) then go with the i5. But if you're going for MMOs and will be overclocking to higher frequencies, or will be video editing and stuff like that for your gaming clan or what not, then go with an i7.

4770k has HT

If money isn't a problem and you would like to make youtube vids...then get a 4770k. If money is the problem, then get the 4670k and use the extra 100 bucks on a cpu cooler or graphics card or whatever else you might want

it will be decent for light editing, but the i7 would be better, and, you can get the 4770K for 250 dollars at micro center, but, you could also get the 4670K from micro center for 180. Personally i would get the i7

The i7 will be noticeably faster, but its not so much about capabilities but rather render times and editing work load.

If you can afford it, then just go with the i7 and aftermarket cool it with a strong overclocking air cooler or at least an AIO.

I would recommend a noctua NH-d14 for air cooling and a corsair h100I for AIO water cooling. If you plan on overclocking really high, get a cooler master glacer 240L, it is the best AIO water cooler out there

I he could use cuda or open cl ,then the difference will be tiny.

Today very rarely would additional parallel hardware help a game as most are single/dual threaded for the most part. In the future maybe games will come with 8+ core support and then the i7 could see perhaps 20-30% extra performance over the i5 like other software built with parallelism and concurrency does. But we don't know how likely that is to happen now because its the future. Most software still does not utilise many cores well, but games are finding it necessary to do so in order to push the envelope, I am hopefully they will work through the problems of it and get it working well but I also know as a developer its very hard to get this right.
