Hi everyone,

I just rewatched the cleanest ever setup video where they took a Blade Stealth and hooked up an eGPU to it, and it got me thinking. My girlfriend's birthday is coming up, and I want to do something similar for her 2020 MacBook Pro as a present.

The end goal is to have a simple solution where she can use her MacBook for school work, and also be able to hop over to her Windows install to play games, without a huge amount of complicated steps on her end to make it all work. If anyone knows of any products that would be worth checking out, or if anyone else has done this before, any help would be much appreciated. :)

Thank you for reading!

If you are going for an ultimate Mac setup and want an egpu, make sure you get amd. Apple does not support nvidia. I would also take a look at Logitech for mice. The Mx master is a great mouse and they have a whole gaming line if that’s what you are after.

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.

@Friendly_Chemist welcome to the forum

An eGPU would be a good solution

AMD 5600 ( XT ) or 5500 ( XT ) maybe a rx 580 won’t exceed your budget

TB 3 enclosures range from about 200 to 500 €/$\£\

zotac AMP boxes are on the cheaper end but have tight power limits ( some only 180 watts not a Problem for low end but maybe mid end  ) and are length restricted ( so often only 200 mm long cards will fit

For the most part, everything shown in the video will be compatible. You can power the MacBook by the eGPU (I'm not sure if you could do that with the Razer Blade), but make sure it's an AMD GPU. Unfortunately, ever since Mojave, Apple has blocked driver support from Nvidia. Now, you can put an Nvidia card in it, but she'll have to switch her inputs when she is running macOS as it'll only output on Windows. You should try getting ethernet to the Thunderbolt 3 dock, it'll improve her download speeds. I agree with @zeusthemouse, the Mx master is a great mouse and the G502 is the gaming counterpart in my opinion. They both have wireless models. You can either get 2 monitors or one ultrawide. macOS works with eGPUs natively, but you might have to get a driver on Windows 10.

2 monitors

sometimes getting the Videosignal out of the eGPU and into an external monitor can improve framerstes because the TB3 connection doesn’t have to carry information for the GPU and the Videosignal at the same time

even more important in my opinion the increased reliability and stability of the connection plus lower ping

I meant 2 monitors coming out of the eGPU, not one out of the GPU and one out of a dock. Sorry if that got mixed up.

I‘m not confused with that

it‘s just an advice for improving framerates when using eGPU

Example:

PC <==TB 3 cable==> eGPU

( the TB cable carries information for GPU and video)

PC <==TB 3 cable==>eGPU==videocable==>monitor

( the TB 3 cable only carries information for GPU => more bandwidth for GPU=> more fps

youtouber der8auer measured that in a video about eGPU ( could not find it )
