Are 8 cores going to be enough for gaming/light video editing for the next 4-6 years?

any ubitsoft games is cpu bottlenecked, mhw, Detroit maxed it out at 60 on certain scenes (some kinda emulation from a ps4 port), Then there were apex complaining how no cpu can run 240fps smoothly, but thats more of a single core issue.i think 8 cores in 5 years will be what 4 cores is today.

Then there were apex complaining how no cpu can run 240fps smoothly, but thats more of a single core issue. Tech tubers did mention brieflymention about the bottlenecks even when the 9900k came out, but they didnt go in depth with it because there's no solution and people get salty if they talked about "bottleneck" on a faster gaming cpu. Single core performance likely isn't going anywhere for a long time :(

Oh okay. I am okay with that, if 8 cores last 5 years that's great imo.
I am not planning to run 144+fps so that's a relief ig.

So you mean single core performance is more important than multicore performance in gaming today?

I don't think i can afford the 3900x btw unless i stretch my budget a lot...
Would you go for 3700x+2080ti or 3900x+2080 super?(maybe the next gen offerings)

. I don't think it's too advisable to invest into a 12 core now, it's probably a better idea to save that money and invest it into a new CPU in the future. Before you run into a thread limitation I'd guess you'll be bottlenecked by raw core performance.

Oh okay, its really stretchng the budget a lot for me if i go for the 3900x.
Like i could either go for the 3900x+2080 super or the 3700x+2080ti

Do you mean single core performance when you say raw core performance?

My Xeon is now 7 years old and still going quite strong, I can see it limiting the Vega but it's nowhere near unbearable.

Oh wow, that is a long time for a cpu to last :P

Yeah, exactly. I'll just give you a personal example, my CPU is at around 60% usage at max in games. 8 threads are still alright by todays standard, yet it performs worse than modern CPUs as the single core performance just isn't there, even though the Processor isn't at it's theoretical limit of 100% it's still the limiting factor (that said games are still perfectly playable).

Is it too much to expect atleast 4-5 years of this smoothly with an 8 core cpu like let's say 4700x? I will also be doing light video editing.

With the standard disclaimer that you can never know what will happen with tech, I think its fair to assume that.  Esp being that the 4700x will likely be a beast of a chip (might be the one to finally edge out intel in gaming?) and I have run 5+ years on much more garbage CPU's.

With the new gen consoles also being 8 core, I would put my money on the 8 core CPU working well for gaming for a generation at least.  Ive been wrong before though  :)

Light video editing can be done on a wide variety of chips.  The important thing here, if you do videos like I do (maybe 1-2 per week, involving either gameplay footage, streaming footage, or unrelated go pro footage) there isnt really a time crunch factor where time is money.  So my 9900k does fantastic, timeline scrubbing is fine, and renders fast enough.  It's no threadripper in terms of rendering, but I also dont really need the video done in 200% less time, as I dont make money on videos :)

My bet would be you would be fine in all aspects for 4-5 years.  My crystal ball is as cloudy as everyone elses though, but id put my money there.

Lol i hope for that too, i am probably going to get the 4700x as after reading all these answers i do feel confident that im good atleast for the next 4 years :)

So you think buying a 12 core cpu just for future proofing would not be a good idea then?

You don't buy something for "Future proofing".

You buy something for *NOW*, and then add on a little bit if you want to do it with style.

Just don't buy something 1 month before something new is coming out unless you get it at a huge discount.
