College computer for my son. First PC build in 6 or 7 years

Jason 57

So in Fall 2019, I built my son a computer for college for Fall 2020. He invested $1400 and I put a bit more into it because I overspent.

I know I didn't get the greatest of components at the time (the Motherboard makes me regret what I got) but at least I was trying to give him an upgrade path as he gets older.

Here are the specs of what I got:

CPU

AMD RYZEN 5 2600X 6-Core 3.6 GHz (4.2 GHz Max Boost) Socket AM4 95W

MB

MSI MPG X570 GAMING EDGE

WIFI

Memory
CORSAIR Vengeance RGB Pro 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 DRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600)

GPU

MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT DirectX 12 RX 5700 XT MECH OC

Power Supply

Antec HCG1000 Extreme 1000W Fully Modular, 80 PLUS GOLD

SDD/HDD/STORAGE

Corsair Force MP600 M.2 2280 1TB PCI-Express Gen 4.0 x4 NVMe 3D TLC Internal Solid State Drive

Case

MSI MPG SEKIRA 500X

KeyBoard

MSI Vigor Cherry MX RGB Dedicated Hotkeys Mechanical Gaming Keyboard (VIGOR GK70 CR US)

Mouse

MSI Gaming Mouse (Interceptor DS200)

Headset

MSI Gaming Headset with Microphone, Enhanced Virtual 7.1 Surround Sound, Intelligent Vibration System (DS 502)

Monitor

MSI Optix AG32C 32" Red LED Non-Glare Super Narrow Bezel 1ms Response Full HD 1920 x 1080 165Hz Refresh Rate FreeSync

I decided to do as much MSI gear as I could at the time.

I know the cable management isn't the best on the backside. It has been about 6 years since I had built a PC, and honestly, this is the FIRST time I have tried to cable manage one.

Also, this is the FIRST time I have never used a SATA cable or NO optical drive.

Nice! I know you mentioned the motherboard, but I'll say it just so you know. A worse motherboard with a better chipset is not better than a better motherboard with a worse chipset, as long as the chipset has support for everything you would want. Also you overspent on the PSU by a pretty good margin, but all in all a solid build.

Well done.

Thank you!

Yeah, after looking at so many other PSUs and other components over the last 8 months, $161 for that 1000W was a bit much. LOL

But I also didn't want him to need a PSU for a decade or so! LMAO.

As for the MB, that is one of my beliefs over the years, get as much of a new chipset as you can, that way you don't need to upgrade that if you can get away with it. Granted, AMD has been kind enough to keep with their sockets for a GOOD long time.

I am going to post my old PC and his that I combined to what I currently have. I know I have talked about it elsewhere, but I figure I'll put actual pictures in the post this time. :)

Cat hair accumulates quickly! LOL (Don't worry, you want to see dust, that post is forth coming. Just need a break during work to post it.)

Actually that photo was taken after running it for a bit and the installation of the GPU holder.

I guess the joy of not having a camera phone. I need to take better photos and remember where I put them.

Nice build!

Personally I would have gone for either a cheaper X570 like the X570-P or a nice B550 with a 3600, but still a nice build.

Current System: Ryzen 7 3700X, Noctua NH L12 Ghost S1 Edition, 32GB DDR4 @ 3200MHz, MAG B550i Gaming Edge, 1TB WD SN550 NVME, SF750, RTX 3080 Founders Edition, Louqe Ghost S1

Thank you.

B550 wasn't out yet when I built this.

Not sure if I even saw the X570-P when I was researching parts.

So far it has proven well. I keep debating about getting the 2TB Seagate Barracuda that Newegg offers for $53USD. But he hasn't been close to running out of space yet.

Yeah, after much more analysis post-build. That is what I wish I had built him.

But I am sure before he graduates in 4 years hopefully, I will probably put a Ryzen 4600 or 5600 in it. (Hence why I got an X570 MB)

5600 would be AM5 socket (not compatible), but yeah 4000 series.

Yeah, sadly the run of the AM4 socket is coming to an end. :(

But I have to give it to AMD for sticking with it for SO long.

I guess I am glad that i don't do CPU upgrades very often!! IE, can't afford.
