LTT video Idea? Duel Boot USB?

So me and my friend where thinking about how he used to boot Linux for stuff on school computers and we thought why make a duel boot usb! You can have windows for games/backup system and Linux for troubleshooting, right?

I would love to see how this might be possible by LMG as we think we found a way to do this with Rufus but I am not positive (trying it out right now) on how to do it.

It is possible to have multible installation ISOs on one USb drive with something like MultibootUSB or YUMI, however I don't think making a USB to boot a fully fledged Windows OS is possible.

Please mention or quote me if you want a response. :)

To install Windows you can use WinToUSB that's made for it, or you can install Windows to a spare normal internal drive then clone it to the card. Then reduce the partition with something like Minitool partition manager to make room for a linux partition and install it there.

I have a microSD with only an Ubuntu install, as long as it's a good fast card it's perfectly usable. Windows might not be the same in terms of performance, and it'll also likely be much more finicky with drivers when going from one machine to another.

Avoid USB flash drives, they're pretty much all a lot slower than a good card and reader.

Will boot almost any ISO and any number of ISOs from a USB, doesn't matter what it is or how many you want. You simply drop any number of ISOs onto the USB Drive, boot from it and all the ISOs show in a boot menu and unlike most other tools that do something similar Ventoy allows you to reformat the USB partition to NTFS so you can add ISOs bigger than 4GB.

Right now I have Windows 10 2004 (installer), Ubuntu 20.04 (installer), Macrium Reflect (recovery) and Hirens all on a single USB drive.

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)

Nice, didn't know this one. Several other multi-iso loaders I've tried just didn't work with modern UEFI stuff. Will give it a try.

That is great for recovery but he's after full installs for working on though...

I forgot about this post, but yes I have discovered ventoy and it's awesome. but it's essentially only holds ISO's so you can install them to things it doesn't work as the boot medium.

WinToUSB got discontinued and even then it only worked with cerian drives. Could you elaborate on the rest you were talking about though? Sounds interesting but a lot of work.

WinToUSB isn't discontinued, and it absolutely doesn't require certain drives.

oh... I thought that was the name of the windows one... oh nvm that one is called windows to go if I remember correctly. but is this it? https://www.easyuefi.com/wintousb/

because I have been meaning to revive this project and I think this might be the perfect thing.

Windows To Go is the official implementation, but WinToUSB is an easy way to do it for free. Other tools like UUI (Universal USB Installer) and Rufus (I think) can also make WTG drives. You'll want to use a fast drive - an actual SSD is ideal (in some sort of enclosure), but even a USB 3 hard drive would be preferable to a slow USB 3 flash drive.

Cool! definitely gonna try this out at some point! maybe mix a bit of Ventoy and SDI and that sounds like I could really make 1 USB for every use case, thanks!
