Password Protected Text Box Visual Basic

I was wondering how I can make a text box be password protected locally on a computer in visual basic. My thought is it checks with a file on the PC with the password but the issue is the file could be accessed and to password protect the file I'm not sure if Visual Basic could read it then. Any help would be appreciated.

Use the industry standard method... Hash the password, store that in the file. When user enters password hash it the same way, if hashes match access is granted. That way what is stored in the file can't be used to find the actual password.

In fact you should use an algorithm that's specifically designed for password storage (e.g not something like SHA256). Instead use BCrypt or PBKDF2. See https://security.stackexchange.com/a/163044 as a starting point.

 

Of course if your attacker has file level access and is able to replace the file's contents, they might still be able to circumvent your password protection by replacing its contents with something they do know the password for.

Sorry, I don't. I'm mostly a Java developer myself. Assuming you mean VB.Net, you should be able to use any library for .Net. Something like http://derekslager.com/blog/posts/2007/10/bcrypt-dotnet-strong-password-hashing-for-dotnet-and-mono.ashx.

If it's VB.Net then it's easier to find C# code and then the method names and namespaces are the same so just convert the method into sub/function and change the variable declaration and your good to go.
