Hi,

my brothers Xbox one x has just broken on him and just won’t boot up so he’s decided to wait until the next gen consoles to get a new one but he is also contemplating getting a console sized pc.

what I wanted to know is if he was to build a pc at the estimated price of the console at around £600 will it perform to the same standard at 4K as the next gen consoles?

he’s pretty adamant that he wants to pay at 4K even though I tried explaining to him as best as I could that getting the components to play at a constant 60 FPS at 4K will more than likely cost more than the new Xbox or PlayStation would cost

It's hard to judge what exactly he'll be able to build in 6 months, since pricing changes over time. But it's unlikely that he'll be able to build a comparable PC to the Xbox Series X (or PS5) for the same cost.

He can probably get one kind of close, but he'll be sacrificing some areas to do it.

There are definitely good reasons to go either direction. If he wants to try a console sized PC, make sure he's comfortable everything that goes along with PC Couch Gaming (I assume this will be a couch PC). Lack of a good UI. More complicated installation processes and troubleshooting, etc.

PC Couch Gaming can be done, but it's quite simply not as good as Console Couch Gaming.

If he's already familiar with PC Gaming and will be using the PC at a desk, then it's entirely personal preference.

As with all the new releases like this, a new gen console will perform better than an equivalently priced PC until the exclusive console components hit mainstream PC markets at reasonable prices.

This article https://www.pcgamesn.com/sony-ps5-release-date-pc-equivalent-build shows how you can build a similar spec'd pc to the ps5, for only $580. Also once the next gen of pc hardware comes out in the fall the price to performance will increase as well.

Lower core count CPU + much worse GPU (PS5 should clap even a 5700XT, Xbox Series X will as well). Plus the overhead of Windows and all its related programs and launchers. The new consoles are gonna clap an equivalently priced PC if they launch at a reasonable price of $500-600, if they're cheaper then it's even crazier.

What @dalekphalm said is pretty much it. PCs can probably get close-ish but you're sacrificing in some areas, plus PCs really suck for couch gaming vs a console. It really depends on what the use case is + which platform has the games you want + which platform your friends are on. Both platforms have pros and cons and neither is just blanket "better".

That build is so flawed and skewed towards PC's favour and still costs more than the launch price for PS5.

They basically just magically decided that they can get a comparable CPU and GPU for $300 all in. That's ridiculous. The GPU they're basing it all on, the RX 5700, retails for $380 all by itself on NewEgg. Let's optimistically say $300 if you grab one on a killer discount.

They dropped in a CPU with less cores - but it's faster clock, so let's call it even. They said they could get it for $100. Bullshit. List price is $200 - though it's currently on sale for $170.

The MB is on point, $80.

Case: Corsair 100R - they listed that at $50 when in fact it's closer to $70.

The Addlink S70 512GB SSD (which is half the storage size, btw) is $190 on Newegg, but $75 on Amazon, so we'll go with that.

The PSU is around $50, close enough.

They have RAM for around $40, so we'll give them that too.

Okay so lets add it up:

CPU: $170

RAM: $40

MB: $80

GPU: $300 (this should really be $350+)

Case: $70

SSD: $75

PSU: $50

Total: $785

So they basically underpriced their system by a good $200. Let's assume that the other prices were accurate at the time they posted their article - $280 for everything but the GPU and CPU. Even if we assume that pricing is easily attainable, the CPU and GPU pricing are literally fiction.

Could that change by November? Maybe. But they don't know that. They're just pulling a magical GPU out of their ass for $200 that will seemingly be comparable with a $350+ GPU right now.

And even after all of the sketchy pricing, it's still not comparable. No Blu-Ray drive, and the SSD is half the size.

We dont know what is coming in december. However, wether you want a console or Pc depends on 2 things

a) Will you be playing in the lounge on a giant TV or will you be Grinding on a 27" monitor.

b)are you interested in console exclusives like forza Horizon or Ratchet and Clank.

A mid range PC will probably cost the same as a console if your willing to make a few sacrifices.

One more thing, PC's tend to go wrong more often, but they have the advantage of not having to pay for online gaming.

In your case, the Xbox series X may be a good buy if you dont want to rebuy all the games you already have (the next gen consoles will have backwards compatibility)
