alternatives?

Lays

My friend is looking at getting an SSD for his laptop, 120gb should be fine.  I suggested a 840 evo, is there any alternatives to this that are cheaper with good performance? He'll be using this drive in his future PC build as well later on down the road

There probably won't be much difference in terms of performance between drives. If he's just going for a 120GB, I'm assuming he's not going to be moving huge files all the time on it.

There's the Kingston V300 http://pcpartpicker.com/part/kingston-internal-hard-drive-sv300s37a120g

And the Adata Premier Pro SP600. http://pcpartpicker.com/part/a-data-internal-hard-drive-asp600s3128gmc

Both around $10 cheaper than the EVO

I think the V300 is only $64.

To some people that's a lot of money.

Honestly though, any SSD will do. Chances are very, very slim that you'll notice the performance difference between SSD's. You'll just be blown away by the speed of them compared to HDD's.

The (I'm assuming) Samsung SSD I have in my laptop feels just as fast as the SSD that's in my PC, which is an old OCZ, and that feels just as fast as the new Intel SSD in my friends rig.

I guess that may be true, the longevity is another thing to consider as well, I can't really say which are better for it, but it seems like the Samsung Evo is pretty well regarded.

So? I don't think you need to worry about using credit/debit on Amazon.

He has no way of transferring his money from paypal to bank acc/debit  because he doesn't have a bank account/ debit card.

(before you say paypal has a debit card, it takes 3-5 weeks to receive the card)
