Hi all,

I am currently thinking about building my first custom loop. I spend a few hours yesterday, trying to oc my r7 1700 to its limit and I am currently at 4.05GHz at 1.425V. The problem is, that the CPU hits 90°C under prime95 and it is to high, as far as I know. I am currently using a beQuiet! shadow Rock 2. It was really good under my mild oc before, but it is just not enough at 4.05GHz. How much of an improvement could a custom loop give me?
Can you guys recommend any parts for that?
Greetings Devryd

Most probably none. 1st Gen ryzen had a hard cap at around that 4.0~4.1 GHz mark. While it may improve temperatures to the mid-high 80's (guess) you have no more overclocking headroom just by silicon quality.

I should have said that more clearly, sorry.
I ment the temperature improvement.

At those high voltages, I think the efficiency is so low that the temps will be quite bad even with a good custom loop. Optimistically, high 70's. More likely to be in the mid-high 80's. Of course it all depends on ambient temperature, radiator surface area, and airflow.

Thats, too bad...
I thought at these high loads a custom loop would really shine.
Then I guess, I don't have much choice than to lower my OC a little

With a 7nm CPU the heat is focused in a very small surface area. You can end up in a similar situation as Jayz2cents when he ran 4x480mm rads with an 8700K that wasn't delidded - the liquid temperature was basically ambient but the CPU still reached 80°C.

What’s the use for the chip and why is that temp a concern?

@Mick Naughty I use it for gaming mainly and also for university. I am just not really comfortable with running it at 90°C under full load. I know, it is technically ok, but it is just really high. If it gets even a few degrees warmer in my room, it will start to throttle. And also, I am only getting these temps with the side panel off. If I put it on again, it would be a lot warmer, because my case (be quiet! pure base 600) has pretty bad airflow.

But you said it does it on prime. What are the real world temps if you’re just gonna game?

With how old the 1700x is, I wouldn't throw money at it for a little bit of cooling.
