I'm having problems setting up a server on my computer for me and my brother to play on.

I am able to start the server and join locally, but my brother (lives in a different state) can't join. He times out when I give him the private IP (I know it has to be public IP), but when I give him the public IP (it's really long) it just immediately fails and says that it can't be found. I assuming it has to be somewhere in the network settings that I have messed up. I allowed the connection through my firewall and have tried several things. I think it might have something to do with port forwarding, but I'm not sure.

I have included a screenshot of the port forwarding settings for my router. I blocked out what I thought might be important.

This may sound stupid, but make sure you're using the right IP address. I had some trouble with this at first when I was trying to set up my server. Go to this website: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

The IP you want to use is the IPv4 address, not the IPv6.

I mostly speak from my own past experience from similar problems. My solution may not work for you, but I'll always try my best to help as much as I can. If you want me to see your reply, make sure to quote my comment or mention me @WaggishOhio383, and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

You need to give him your public IPv4 address. The really long one is IPv6. A private IPv4 address will not route over the internet.

Edit:

Additionally nobody can do anything with a private IPv4 address. My local subnet is 192.168.66.128/25 and my PC is 192.168.66.131. I could be 192.168.1.100 or anything in the 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255 range (along with the 172.16.0.0/12 and 10.0.0.0/8 range) and nobody could do anything with it from outside the network. :)

I know Spectrum gives out IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. If the link @WaggishOhio383 doesn't give you an IPv4 address then try this one:

Make sure you give him the IPv4 address that is xx.xx.xx.xxx and not super long, another thing is do you have the default port or have you changed it in the config?

Reminder⚠️

I'm just speaking from experience so what I say may not work 100%

Please try searching up the answer before you post here but I am always glad to help

I didn't know there was a public IPv4 address. I kinda hate the whole networking side of computers.

I will try it out when he's off work, thanks guys!

You should quote and also most routers or ISP's at least where I live only provide IPv6 when you ask for it
