Pick up a used office PC with a fast CPU with at least a dual core i3 2nd generation at anywhere between 3 and 4 GHz,

8GB of RAM is plenty. Then port forward TCP port 25565 to your Minecraft Server's IP address and let your friends connect.

They'll need your WAN IP or a domain name if you have one.

Dell Optiplex 3020 or 9020 systems can be found for under $100 typically with a fast i3 or i5 and

just add some RAM to the mix if needed and a small SSD for Minecraft and Windows.

HP Prodesk 400 (G1/G2) is also an option for a similar price.

I almost want to say that 16gb of memory is more than enough. I ran one with 4gb once (don't do that it didn't turn out well). 8gb is a good amount. Sometimes you'll find that a prebuilt is good. You can find some refurbished ones for cheap. Then you can upgrade it. I would find one with a decent cpu as prebuilt computer's motherboards tend to be stupid with new processors and their compatibility. Ram and Storage on the other hand is fine. If you need to upgrade ram you can find memory like this online: https://www.amazon.com/Patriot-Signature-PC3-12800-1600MHz-PSD38G16002/dp/B007HILOWG/

(Assuming you get an early 2010's desktop with ddr3)

Otherwise you can build one.

For all these parts I would look at older stuff as going to best buy with $150 to spend on pc parts will get you a pretty bad server.

However, eBay, Amazon, even Newegg have older generation and refurbished parts that will work fine for your build.

  • I would get any case really doesn't matter as long as it's the right size for the mobo.
  • For CPU I would put most budget here. If you can find a decent i5 that will be good. I ran a minecraft server with an AMD A8. It has 4 cores clocked at around 3.5 ghz.
  • For ram 8gb would suffice
  • For a motherboard I would look for anything that is compatible with the CPU and has gigabit ethernet (most do)
  • If you're just running a minecraft server a power supply shouldn't be a problem. Depending on your CPU I would get around a 300w to 400w
  • As far as I know gpu does not matter, but if your motherboard and CPU don't support integrated graphics I would find a cheapo whatever for a couple bucks to set up and configure your server.

I hope this helped, good luck!
