hey guys

i bought the U-phoria UM2 and an X LR Mic Shure SM58 with an XLR to XLR cable , so here goes my issue .

every time i try to record my audio the mic input volume is too low even tho the gain of UM2 is on 50% to 70% , and if i try to go higher the background hiss and ground noise is higher than my voice . if i try to record on lower gain and edit the file the hiss goes lowder and the noise reduction effect makes the sound weird .

any idea what i am doing wrong ? any tips to make these sounds better ?

PS: i am recording for a gaming video commentary.

thank you all.

SM58 is a dynamic mic and requires a lot of gain compared to a condenser microphone,
The UM2 is a budget interface and doesn't have much headroom on the mic preamps without adding noise
Add the two together and you get *drumroll* not a good time.

Now, your issue sounds like it's worse than most who use a similar setup so it is possible that something is broken but assuming it's fine...
Your options (in ascending order by price) are to
1, Get an inline mic preamps (like the Klark teknik CM1)
2, Get a condenser mic (like the Behringer C2)
or
3, Get a much better interface.
