Contact tracing apps

dont know how many people have notice that both apple and google quietly introduced these contact tracing apps into their respective OS's, you can find them in the settings, google will be under settings>google settings, and iphone users its under privacy and health settings. by default they are off. but here is the quesiton. they could turn these on if they wanted without our permission, as we are all aware our phones are never truly "off" so as a result i am researching into a way to simply disable bluetooth altogether by either removing the module or in the case where the wifi and bluetooth are in ONE module, soldering a resistor to the bluetooth antenna to stop it from transmitting. but as far as apple products go i am left wondering if they can use the U1 chip for contact tracing instead of just bluetooth? is this possible or not i want to hear everyone's thoughts. This is a great community i can't believe i waited this long to join lol.

I heard Apple was going to add this feature but didn't know it was already out. Trying to disable the bluetooth really doesn't do anything to protect you or keep your identity anonymous. You are plastered everywhere on the internet and in databases. Your phone is extremely easy to identify, bluetooth enabled or not.

Usually in phones all wireless connectivity is provided by the SoC.

in apple both wifi and BLE are on the same module but it isnt the same as the AP (CPU) and they use different antenna's. what i am curious about is the efficacy of using the U1 chip for contact tracing instead of BLE..

So if you were looking at your phone and someone gets really close to your side or your back, they will not be detected. And if you were in a orgy with 100 people and none of them has an iPhone 11, then none of them would be detected.

They can't just turn your Bluetooth on without your permission.  The OS is built to let you know if an app or feature wants Bluetooth.  If you're really worried, just turn Bluetooth off.

 

Also: please, please use contact tracing apps, at least ones under the Apple/Google model (that depends on your country).  They maintain privacy; and more importantly, they'll help stay out of further lockdowns by making it easier to track who's been exposed and prevent further outbreaks.  They're only one part of the solution, but right now we need what help we can get.

SARS2 is just more infectious and has a longer incubation time. this contact tracing app can be used for other things besides just for tracking viral spread. you should look into how they had to change the language of the UK app's contract... thats all i am going to say. if you think they cannot use your phone against you without your permission then you are ignoring what they do in the US for people they suspect as terrorists, and since these protests have a tendency to turn violent, they could conceivably use the app to track who is at these protests, or if a war breaks out they can track who is at, say, a meeting of sorts... you have toi either disable BLE at the hardware level or leave your phone at home, but too many people are reliant on the other things like GPS built into them so leaving them home isnt an option for some people. social media and bad epistemology will be the end of the world, and we are already seeing it take place..

Not going to get into discussing the virus itself other than to say that you're demonstrating genuine scientific ignorance, and that death isn't the only serious consequence.

 

Also, the UK app is switching to the privacy-focused Apple/Google model... of which you know nothing, because it's designed based on a peer-to-peer exchange system using anonymized info.  There's no location data, either.  Yes, protesters do have to worry about turning off location sharing and other features that actually could be used to track their whereabouts, but Bluetooth-based contact tracing isn't one of them.  It's a pretty lousy method, in fact.
