Somebody please consider speaking with Linus about this

 

Everybody wants to see what kind of ridiculous things Spot from Boston Dynamics is able to do if untethered from a company that needs to maintain a professional appearance for it's shareholders, but the cost is extremely high even for a channel like LTT, my idea is simple; Why not get together with the usual suspects, you know the ones; Bitwit, MKBHD, JayzTwoCents etc; Buy Spot, share the intitial cost and ongoing maintentance. Maybe start with a collaborative project, that way all channels get the intial exposure for their respective channels, recover some of the cost and potentially gain a lot of new subscribers; Then afterwards each channel could use it on a rotating basis for a month at a time for individual projects. That way everybody gets the benefits without the cost and risk of the initial $75,000.

 

An ongoing opportunity for further creator collaboration with such a unique piece of hardware could be extremely beneficial for all, and speaking as a fan I really want to see what kind of ridiculous shit you guys come up with.

The cost and logistics you are suggesting will be large. 75k USD would only be part of the investment incurred. Shipping costs alone would be high. This kind of thing only works in limited scenarios. And besides, if Linus wanted to he would outright buy the thing, have you not seen some of the things he has spent money on? Those 2 two red cameras cost him over 100k. The studio expansions, the recent workshop expansions. The only thing stopping him from buying is justifying the cost. IMO there is no reason to.

BD aren't about to give out $75,000 worth of hardware to youtubers, they don't exactly operate with huge amounts of revenue and there's nothing wrong with supporting tech firms by buying their products and working with them publicly, that's literally how the economy works.

I'm not sure if your idea would work. What I'm even less sure about, is if the YouTubers you mentioned are the right folks to do this;

really I don't think any of the channels you mentioned truly have the technical expertise to make proper use of the machine. No offense to any of them, I think they're great and I watch their videos all the time, but when it comes to that sort of low-level EE and ME, they don't tend to be the strongest contenders on the internet.

 

I'm sure there'd be great potential for some videos, but in that case a collaboration with BD would be a better idea; let them build, set up and operate the robot and let Linus or other YouTubers (or both) make a video about it (which is what they do best after all).
