Upgrade from I7 6700 to I7 8700

I need a bit of help here. So I currently have an I7 6700. I do a lot of video editing using the Adobe suite (Including heavy VFX using After effects). I also do some gaming. I notice significant lag when editing using my 6700, this lag only occurs during playback (even at reduced resolutions) and switching panels. I edit using 4k files at 100mbps in mp4 codec. I understand that more cores and threads is better for video editing and compositing etc. I need to know if an upgrade from the 4 core 6700 to the 6 core 8700 is going to make a significant difference and improve the playback and panel lag. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

That would mean you would have to upgrade the motherboard as well, you do realize that?

if you plan on upgrading just get a i7-9700K in the first place. the price doesnt change That much honestly You will still have to upgrade to a new motherboard to support LGA1151 V2 for eighth generation and up cpus

If he's got to upgrade the motherboard anyway, why would you advise him to move to another just as dead platform in Z390?

^ exactly

If OP can afford a new cpu and platform moving to a platform that is way more scalable with better options like ryzen is a lot better

PC: Motherboard: ASUS B550M TUF-Plus, CPU: Ryzen 3 3100, CPU Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34, GPU: GIGABYTE WindForce GTX1650S, RAM: HyperX Fury RGB 2x8GB 3200 CL16, Case, CoolerMaster MB311L ARGB, Boot Drive: 250GB MX500, Game Drive: WD Blue 1TB 7200RPM HDD.

Peripherals: GK61 (Optical Gateron Red) with Mistel White/Orange keycaps, Logitech G102 (Purple), BitWit Ensemble Grey Deskpad.

Audio: Logitech G432, Moondrop Starfield, Mic: Razer Siren Mini (White).

what if he specifically in need of intel? i dont like making people move to different platforms just cause it could be better.. i tend to let people stick with what they are known with..

Comet Lake-S just released along with the Z490. That sounds like a more logical recommendation than the 2-year old 9700K and Z390 platform, well to me at least.

maybe they use some kind of intel specific features or programs that amd would suck at. Op didnt mention gaming what so ever in the first place so i would assume they use it for professional purposes.

Isn't 10600(K) price lower?

At least I'm going from 6700K to 10600K. I think it's worth it.

I edit my posts more often than not

from a budget point. op wanted to upgrade to 8 gen.. was it specific or not its up to them to choose. so i naturally would go to the last gen that platform can deliver and staying in approx the same price point.

Oh this is a bit of a problem. I am a bit of a novice when it comes to motherboards at the moment, so I just went with what the guy at the tech shop said. He told me I would be able to fit my 6th gen processor into an 8th gen socket because they were the same. I did the build yesterday and everything fired up except there was nothing that appeared on my screen. Does this mean I have fried my cpu/motherboard??

There are 2 versions of LGA 1151...

LGA 1151 V1: 6th & 7th gen

LGA 1151 V2: 8th & 9th gen

I was instructed by my local tech store to put my 6th gen cpu in an 8th gen motherboard because they were the same socket. I have now done that and nothing comes up on my screen in the boot up process. Hopefully I haven't damaged my components. I am looking at getting a second hand 8700 which is much cheaper than a 9700k and rhyzen equivalent or so I'm told.

You should also do your own research, never rely on one source.

Yeah realize that now, so do you think my CPU and mother board will have survived being put in the wrong socket and powered on?

6th gen and 7th gen Intel CPUs work with 100 series and 200 series chipsets. 8th and 9th gen CPUs work with 300 series chipsets.

It's the same numbers of pins, just very slightly different layout iirc. Either way, your 6700 won't work with a 300 series board.
