Budget (including currency): £1300

Country: UK

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:  4k gaming. Photo manipulation and editing. Vr gaming. 3 monitor set up.

Other details

It's been a while since my last pc build (4 years) and I haven't kept up to date with the latest hardware so I wanted to run my ideas by some people to see if what I'm planning makes sense.
It's aimed to be a jack of all trades pc, gaming photoeditting and vr. It'll run 1 4k monitor with 2 single 1080p monitors as well as an oculus rift. My current rig has always felt a little bottlenecked by the cpu (6600k and gtx 1080) so I'm planning the following

Mobo: Asus TUF B450 m plus

CPU: amd 3600x

Ram: corsair vengeance ddr4 3000mhz 16gb

Ssd: Kingston a2000 250gb nvme m.2

Gpu: RTX 2080 super

Psu: corsair cx650m

My only thoughts are would a 2070 super suffice leaving me a bit more to shell out for a better cpu or an extra 16gb of ram or is a 2080 super about right for the requirements. Also could I get away with a 3600 as opposed to a 3600x

Thanks!

If you dont need to buy now, dont. Ryzen 4000 is coming out very soon and new gpus are right after that. If you do need to do it now, you can definitely get a 3600 instead of the 3600x as it is basically the same just with slightly lower clocks.

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.

Yeah a 3600 would be fine because a 3600x is just slightly clock boosted. If you are just looking for gaming horses that's probably the best config, but if you wanted to focus a little bit more on workstation / cpu horses grab a 2070S and a 3700x. You also really want at least a 500gb SSD for boot and a 2tb mass storage HDD. Also, for the motherboard, wait until tomorrow when you can buy B550 boards.

Oh wow the b550's release tomorrow? I will definitely wait then!

Sorry I forgot to mention I have extra SSds and HDDs prior to this build so they're not much of a necessity, just wanted an nvme for a boot drive really.

Thanks for your advice though!

I'm not in any huge rush, only factor is that my girlfriend gets my old pc so she's excited to get gaming 😂

Is there any release dates for the ryzen 4000s and rtx 3000s or is just some time this summer?

Rtx 3000 is rumored for around September and some reports that came out today said 4000 might not be until end of the year because some xt processors just got announced today. So it might not be worth it to you to wait for new cpus.

There are rumors that the 4000 series might be pushed back until next year.

More than likely. Seems everything is more expensive in the UK. What are the advantages, I know they have pcie 4.0 which isn't something I'll be utilising right away.

That's basically it.

They also have native support for the 4000 series, but honestly if you're getting that processor you won't need to upgrade for at least 2 years, and at that time you'd be much better off adopting AM5 and getting whatever processor is released for that.

And still (mostly) pointless.

Very few people need PCIe 4.0. The added price doesn't make it worth the purchase over B450 which is fine for most people.

There is more to it than needing pcie 4.0 support. The B550 boards have upgraded VRM's (You have boards like the B550 Master and B550 Taichi etc) and a lot more features on like for like boards i.e B450 Tomahawk vs B550 Tomahawk is night and day in terms of VRM and feature set.

I agree that B450 is still a viable option but prices on them are inflated at the minute and stock is hard to get in certain Countries, as well as X570.

Can anyone provide any feedback on the gpu choice. 2070 super or 2080 super?

Because you’re playing at 4K, I would go with the 2080 super. The 2070 super is more for 1440p gaming.
