so i don't know wether to put this on the gpu or workbench area, but i was wondering about a few things. first of all i wanted to know what the best graphics card for my upcoming $1,000 build would be. i was also wondering about wether or not there is a big enough difference between the rtx 2070 super, and the rx 5700xt to spend more money on the nvidia card, and which one will be better future proofed for next gen games and also competitive with the ps5 and series x. anyway here's the build i'm looking at now https://pcpartpicker.com/user/John0531/saved/4qz4dC

The parts list is private.

The difference between the 2070 Super/RX 5700xt isn't big.   I bought the 2070 Super over the 5700XT because of the driver issues at the time with the 5700XT cart (that was several months ago).  In most games the 2070 Super provides better FPS but not by much.  Personally, if you are comfortable with the drivers for the 5700xt then I would get that over the 2070 Super.   If I bought today, it would be a tough decision between the 2 cards.

Depends on what you want. They're about equal in terms of raw compute performance, with the 5700xt surprisingly edging out in Premiere (OpenCL vs CUDA). The 5700xt is considerably cheaper, but doesn't support NVidia technology like Ray Tracing or DLSS... Yet. However, true ray-tracing and DLSS 2.0 (the good version) are only supported by a handful of titles, so how much those games mean to me would inform my purchase decision.

Those issues are sorted out, I have 5700xt and there aren't any problems related to it, drivers or anything else.

That is really good to hear.  Thank you for providing the update.

It really is up to the OP to pick the card.  The performance gain for a 2070 Super in games is rarely noticeable based on the reviews of the 2 cards that I have reviewed.   As I said, the only reason I picked the 2070 Super was the driver issues that were present in and hotly debated several months ago.   If I bought a GPU today, I would be leaning to the 5700XT card.

There are a few things to take into account.

The performance are very similar, in a few games the RX 5700 XT performs even better than the RTX 2070 Super and, if you ask me, for a $1,000 build I find it very hard to justify the additional $100 needed for an average performance increase of less than 10% - probably is better to spend that money elsewhere.

That said, the RTX 2070 Super offers RTX and is up to you to decide if it's worth it and if you need it (this essentially depends on which games you play).

It also offers DLSS; version 2.0 gives massive performance improvement but it was released just a few months ago and is currently implemented only in four games.

You should also take into account that new nVidia GPUs are rumoured to be released in the upcoming months.

You can find many benchmarks around and for simplicity I would recommend you this recent video from Hardware Unboxed

All in all solid list, may want to spend the extra $15 for a 500gb NVME ssd instead of 250gb. That will fill up fast.

the ssd is just a boot drive

Since you're a first time builder, I'm assuming this needs to include a monitor and peripherals

Even $1500 PCs won't compete with the PS5 right now... If you want PS5 performance for PS5 prices, the only way would be to buy a PS5

no it doesn't need to include peripherals, i already have that sorted out separately but thanks for the effort

Ah well, it's at the value point where spending another $200 won't make it a lot better, unless you wait for new hardware.

The DS3H is awful, get the Pro 4. Also don't buy silicon power SSDs they are just awful, and your power supply really should be 650 watts at least if you want to future proof as the OP wanted. His list was just fine, he never said he wanted a monitor included.

Uh, what's wronng with the DS3H? It's also half the price, and it's been sold out and restocked so many times, there's no chance you'll get a board which has an older BIOS installed - not that the 1600AF needs a new BIOS anyway.

What's wrong with Silicon Power SSDs?

A 10900k + 2080 Ti system still has a TDP of ~ 470w... Not sure why you think you need a 650w GPU to be 'future proof'. Better to spend that money on a higher quality PSU (not that the CVs are bad) than something shitty with a higher wattage rating than needed.

Also, snip your quotes.

It only has 1 chassis fan header. The VRMs are awful. The IO shield is shiny metal. It comes with basically nothing in the box. (I've used it before)

The ultra-cheap ones don't have a DRAM cache, I've used one of their M.2s before and in certain circumstances it's slower than a hard drive because their DRAM cache is tiny to save money.

Because of PSU efficiency, and turbo boost. A PSU is generally more efficient not under full load which makes it quiet. Also, looking directly at the TDP numbers does not allow you to measure power consumption, it's more difficult than that because you have turbo frequency which boost up the clocks a ton in a very short period of time (TVB to 5.3ghz) which means that you can trip your PSU overcurrent with say a 550 watt PSU with a 10900k + 2080ti if 2080ti is under load and you hit TVB hard. I agree with you somewhat, don't buy those 1200 watt $40 PSUs, get something decent, but what I'm saying is you want a good 200 watt headroom in my experience. I have tripped overcurrent protection on PSUs before and have come close to killing stuff.

Elitist. it takes way more time.

Wait, just one fan header? Damn. I've owned a bunch of D3H/DS3H boards and they all had more. Maybe the MSI B450 Pro MAX if it's in stock for a reasonable price anywhere. The ASRock Pro4 was out of stock on Newegg and $150ish on Amazon.

Also, recommending the CV550 was a mistake, apparently significantly worse than the CV650, which would satisfy the headroom requirement too.

I wouldn't recommend the small SSD + 2TB HDD he's picked out though, at $130. Could get a 1TB 660p for less, which has 256mb DRAM https://pcpartpicker.com/product/9nhKHx/intel-660p-series-1tb-m2-2280-solid-state-drive-ssdpeknw010t8x1

That said, I don't know much about the reliability of a QLC SSD.
