I recently built my first SFF and everything is fine besides the temps of my cpu. It was not using a case for about 2 months and the temps were fine until I put them into my case. Any suggestions on what I should use/ do? I believe I need a new cpu cooler am just unsure what I should get.

Current Temps:

Firefox open: 70-90

Minecraft: 90-100

(Am scared to try anything more demanding right now.)

Current Specs:

CPU: AMD 3950x

RAM: Trident Z Neo 64 GB

PSU: SilverStone 800w Platinum

GPU: Rtx 2080 Super

Cpu cooler: Noctua NH-L9a-AM4

Case: Saber 2.0 (Knockoff)

These Temps are with Minecraft open in the background of this post and 4 Firefox tabs.

So what you've got here is a problem.

A Noctua NH-L9a-AM4, or any SFF cooler for that matter, is just not enough cooling for a 3950x, especially in a cramped SFF case. If the case supports it, a 120mm AIO will struggle, but should be able to handle this. If you only have mounting for a 92mm AIO you're back at square one. Basically your options are either get a bigger case and a bigger cooler, or just a bigger cooler and leave the case open.

One more note, you don't need to change the color of your post, the forums do that automatically which lets people using the dark mode see your post.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Wait, you put a 3950X into a case that is similar to the Zaber Sentry 2.0? 😱

Yes, I want to make it possible.
I have more room above my Cpu and could put a bigger heatsink.
I could probably fit a Noctua NH-L9x65 or noctua nhl12s. It might not be enough though.

You really need a bigger case. This is what noctua themselves say about your coolerScreenshot_20200614-192919.thumb.png.289c5eb06f8be0f46c1514b304ab7bc2.png

The only method to cool it good without eco mode or change the case and cooler would be a flat custom loop but I think it’s not worth it

try eco mode

So, I would need water cooling to keep a 3950x from hitting these high temps?

I will try eco mode and see what happens.

Put the cpu into "Eco mode" in bios, that should help the temps massively in your case. But changing the case and cooler would be best.

If you wanted to keep it in a SFF case without downclocking or throttling, yes.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Would trying to mount a rad right above the cpu work?

To do what? Using AIO instead of 92mm tower is already gonna be better. The next thing would be to disable PBO and possible undervolt. 3rd gen Ryzen has some heating issues.
